Angkor Wat foreign visits fall sharply in 2026

Cambodia’s flagship tourist attraction, Angkor Wat, has suffered a steep decline in foreign visitors at the start of 2026, raising fresh concerns for the country’s tourism sector.

Angkor Enterprise, the state agency responsible for ticket sales, reported that just 93,491 international tourists visited the Angkor Archaeological Park in January. That figure represents a 36 per cent drop compared with the same month last year, traditionally one of the busiest periods for arrivals. Revenue from entrance passes fell accordingly, down 34.5 per cent to $4.52 million.

Industry insiders say the downturn is linked to two key factors: the continued closure of land border crossings between Cambodia and Thailand, and wider global economic pressures driven by conflicts in several regions. Both have discouraged travel and tightened spending, particularly among Western tourists who have long been a mainstay of Cambodia’s visitor numbers.

Chhay Sivlin, President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, voiced concern over the trend. “The global economic pressures which have limited tourists’ trips to Cambodia, coupled with land-based border closures between Cambodia and Thailand, have disrupted the tourists’ tour purposes,” she told Khmer Times.

The figures follow a broader slowdown. Cambodia welcomed 5.65 million foreign tourists in 2025, a 17 per cent fall from 6.7 million in 2024. Last year, Angkor Wat’s ticket sales generated $44.7 million, already down 7 per cent from the previous year.

The Ministry of Tourism says it is working closely with private partners to promote Cambodia as a safe and attractive destination. Officials remain hopeful that numbers will recover once border restrictions ease and global conditions stabilise.

For now, however, the sharp drop at the very start of the high season underscores the fragility of Cambodia’s tourism industry. With Angkor Wat at the heart of its appeal, the challenge of restoring confidence among international travellers has rarely looked more urgent.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

I wonder why? Does the average tourist have an aversion to visiting an area close to an active war zone?

My heart goes out of the Cambodian people and all the ones that are being harmed by this economically, but this is a triumph for humanity in regard to the incredibly toxic leadership that that nation continues to endure. They need as much egg on the face as possible. And the entire Western world needs to stop pretending that the place is a democracy.
