Kâmpôt–Phu Quoc ferry link approved for tourism boost

Cambodia has given the go-ahead for a new maritime connection between Kâmpôt Port and Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island, a project expected to strengthen regional tourism and attract more international visitors. The route, pending final approval from Hanoi, would allow Vietnamese ships to dock in Cambodia and open a fresh gateway for travellers.

Oknha Sour Virak, CEO of Virak Buntham Company, said negotiations have already produced encouraging results, with further talks scheduled in February. He noted a sharp rise in tourist flows from Vietnam in recent months, alongside foreign visitors entering Cambodia via Vietnam, particularly after tensions with Thailand.

Cross-border travel has surged, with bus services between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City expanding from six to 14 trips daily. Virak believes the ferry link will build on this momentum, offering a new attraction and reinforcing Cambodia’s appeal as a destination.

Tourism remains central to Cambodia’s economy. Official figures show the country welcomed more than 5.5 million international visitors in 2025, with Vietnamese tourists leading at 1.22 million.

If finalised, the Kâmpôt–Phu Quoc route could symbolise closer cooperation between Cambodia and Vietnam, while giving Cambodia a competitive edge in drawing tourists from across Asia and beyond.
