Iranians Fear War as U.S. Military Build-Up Looms Over Geneva Talks

Tension Mounts Ahead of ‘Last-Chance’ Negotiations

Iranians are anxiously awaiting a new round of talks with the United States in Geneva, widely viewed as a final opportunity to avoid open conflict between Tehran and U.S. President Donald Trump.

The negotiations come as Washington assembles one of its largest military deployments in the Middle East in decades, heightening fears that diplomacy could collapse into war.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is entering the talks determined to secure a “fair and equitable deal” quickly, describing the moment as a “historic opportunity” — but only if diplomacy prevails.

Trump’s ‘Armada’ Signals Escalation

The U.S. military presence now includes major naval assets such as the aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford, alongside at least 16 Navy ships and hundreds of aircraft positioned across the region.

In addition, 12 F-22 stealth fighter jets have reportedly been deployed to Israel, reinforcing what officials describe as a posture capable of launching a large-scale strike.

The scale of the buildup has drawn comparisons to Operation Desert Fox, when U.S. and British forces bombed Iraq for four days in 1998.

Public Anxiety Inside Iran

Inside Iran, the atmosphere is tense. Many citizens — already worn down by years of sanctions and political repression — fear the outbreak of a war that could surpass the devastation of the 1980s Iran-Iraq conflict.

Tehran residents speaking anonymously described feelings of chaos and hopelessness. Some believe the balance of power heavily favors Washington, while others insist Iran cannot be seen to surrender.

Iranian state television has aired footage of military drills by the Revolutionary Guard, including missile launches and drone exercises along the coast, underscoring Tehran’s warnings of retaliation.

Sticking Points Remain

Despite the diplomatic opening, deep divisions persist. Iran insists it will not abandon uranium enrichment, arguing it has a right to peaceful nuclear technology. Trump, however, has repeatedly demanded a halt to enrichment.

Tehran has also refused to negotiate over its ballistic missile program or regional proxy networks — both key U.S. demands.

Comments from Trump envoy Steve Witkoff suggesting Iran should “capitulate” were swiftly rejected by Tehran, which said such language has no place in its political vocabulary.

A Divided Nation Watches

The looming threat of conflict has exposed fractures within Iranian society. Some citizens say they would defend the country if attacked. Others, recalling the eight-year war with Iraq, warn that a confrontation involving the U.S., Israel and NATO would bring unpredictable consequences.

With communications disrupted following recent unrest and trust in authorities low, many Iranians say they feel powerless — unable to influence events yet unable to escape them.

As the Geneva talks approach, the stakes could hardly be higher: a fragile diplomatic window remains open, but the shadow of war hangs heavily over both sides.
