Vietnam's passport has advanced to the 84th position in the Henley Passport Index 2026 ranking, up from 86th in January. This improvement grants Vietnamese passport holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 48 out of 227 destinations worldwide. Vietnam shares this rank with Angola, Burundi, and Central Africa.

Earlier, in July 2025, Vietnam was ranked 84th with access to 51 destinations without a visa. However, the rank shifted, dropping to 88th in September and further to 92nd in October. The current ascent marks a recovery from these previous declines.

Regionally, Vietnam's passport is more robust than those of Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, which stand at 85th, 87th, and 90th respectively. In past years, Cambodia often ranked higher than Vietnam. Meanwhile, Singapore holds the top spot as the world's most powerful passport, offering visa-free entry to 193 destinations.

The Henley Passport Index, based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), evaluates travel freedom across 227 countries and territories. The index considers 199 passports and is recognized for measuring global mobility trends, regularly updating to mirror changes in visa regulations.

Experts see these rankings as indicative of a nation's global connectivity and international relations. The improvement in Vietnam’s rank reflects positively on its diplomatic efforts and travel ease for citizens. Conversely, the least powerful passports are from Pakistan, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

Looking forward, continued diplomatic negotiations could further enhance Vietnam's passport strength. Updates to the Henley Index throughout the year may change rankings as countries amend their visa requirements, reported VN Express.
