Here is a warning to people who fancy wearing gold to beware when buying the precious metal since in Pattaya the latest scam is selling fake gold. We have two stories here that occurred on Tuesday 21st August.

At 5.00 pm the police were informed by the owner of a gold shop in front of Wat Chaimongkhol Temple, South Pattaya Road, that they detained a man who had tried to sell them fake gold. When the police arrived they found the man to be 18 year old Udomsak Phoolpiam from Sinburi province. He told the police that a lady that he knows, one Miss Poom, asked him to sell this gold necklace for her and she would give him part of the share.

Later at 9.00 pm the Pattaya Police were informed of another fake gold scam; this time from a shop in Central Pattaya. It took the police a while before they were able to find 31 year old Tui Nowarit from Nongkhai province. Tui told the police that ever since he came to Pattaya, he had been working as a male prostitute. He did not know that this gold was fake. He claimed that he got it from a foreign tourist that he slept with earlier, and now that he ran out of money, he wanted to sell it.

More questioning will have to be made on both the men to get to the whereabouts of the source of the fake gold.

Fake 'copy' gold chains should be easy to spot - not stamp marking on them. At first glance, there's no difference between the real thing ( 2 baht chain for 20,000 baht) and a 'copy' gold 2 baht chain for 450 baht.

Get a real one from a Gold Shop - get the fake from Big C Pattaya.

There's nothing to be concerned about here because neither of these cases were of a shop trying to sell fake gold. They were both about people trying to sell fake gold to a shop.

What people need to be concerned about is buying underweighted gold jewelry from a shop.

In Thailand it's still possible to end up with 90 to 95% gold sold as 96.5%. It pays to buy from a reputable shop.

Most Hong Kong gold shops will not touch anything from Thailand as they claim the content is often much much lower than what is stamped.
