Is cheap energy the key to China gaining AI supremacy? Leaders hope so

Featured Replies

Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI, has predicted the cost of ai will “eventually converge with the cost of energy”. In October his firm warned that China’s power advantage could “put us leadership [in ai] at risk”. The following month Mr Huang predicted that China “will win the ai race” for the same reason. In January Elon Musk, who owns xAI, another ai company, said that “based on current trends, China will far exceed the rest of the world in ai compute” because of its grid.

It's a good thing Trump and co. are taking this seriously and promoting the deployment of far less costly power through the use of solar and wind.

On the other hand it's tragic that an enthusiastic advocate of market solutions, namely the state of Texas, is stifling their use.

N.B. Both of these statements are true in oppositeworld. Not so much in this one.

Don't listen to Sammy-Boy.

Why?

Listening to Sammy-Boy, one might as well be listening to Trump.

Except, I love to listen to Trump (seriously, I do).

But, trying to listen to Sammy-Boy, with his Vocal Fry, that frog in his throat, similar to Elizabeth Holmes....

It's A Nightmare, Signifying Nothing.

Elon, on the other hand, has a deep grounding in Science.

He is correct that China is way-ahead with its quickly expanding energy infrastructure.

Energy is crucial for both economic development and for AI Technology progress.

Seems unlikely that the USA can catch up with the Rate-Of-Progress now trending in China....UNLESS....

Unless, the Iran War goes well for the USA, and the USA ends with the total destruction of all energy supply from the ME, which will..

Harm China, radically more than the USA.

The key for the USA is to deny China, as much as possible, input of energy resources from without China.

And, to deny China access to advanced chips.

Otherwise, the theory goes: The USA is toast.

In fact, from what little I know about China: The USA is toast, already.

It need not have been this way, if only the leadership of the USA had been tuned in to the future, and had

Practiced far more foresight.

China has been making very steady progress.

The USA always moves forwards, or backwards, in fits and starts.

Very dubious that Trump would take a step like that that would seriously harm his political fortunes. Far more likely that he expected an outcome as simple and clean as the Venezuelan excursion.
