If a hotel will accept your licence they obviously don't care to do things correctly and will care even less if the passport number is valid or not.

Why do you need a new license? I don't think your license is invalid simply because you have a new passport.

Take licence, old passport, new passport to land transport office and ask them to update.

Ok thanks. Why not bother? What's your thoughts on it?

I use my TDL for hotels and travels here.

You should not be able to use your TDL to check into a hotel. To test that point I have tried recently.

Use your pp for travel and for check in.

Some folk update TDL when they renew pp.

Suggest they would be the minority.

Make sure you update with your Thai bank next time you visit branch

@Gee Bangkok + update your SIM card registration sooner rather than later; otherwise you might experience problems with internet/mobile banking. The 4 digits indicated must match the last 4 of your new passport (in the case of AIS SIM's this can be checked by dialling *161#).

Wait until your licence expires.

Don't forget to update with your mobile phone provider especially if you have home banking app.

Yes phone and banking on my list to update. Transfer visa to new passport then banking update I guess? And mobile phone number or phone number first to update? Or doesn't matter 🤣

I'd do the phone first. The phone company isn't interested in your bank account but your bank is interested in your phone account.

First up be aware that if you are transferring stamps at CW that office now requires bank book + update.

List of docs bottom of this form

Re phone I do nothing as I don't use banking app. Has not caused and issue.

To follow up on my post I quoted.

You will need to update licence to new passport number.

If you wait until renewal they will not let you.

Info fresh from Chonburi today, A friend went to renew his, (he renewed passport 6 months ago), was there for hours.

He had to update licence, pay for the "old" licence with updated passport number (he did not tell me how much) then renew the licence.

Very strange. I wonder if this is just Chonburi being difficult?

Probably. Sounds like one of their own "special" rules. No such problem in Bangkok, I've never updated my DL just because I've gotten a new passport.

Call this out as a confused second hand report.

That certainly not how it occurs everywhere else..

Granted Chonburi is weird joint re immigration etc.

I tend to discount this report.

The key number on the TDL is the Driver Licence Number (not the PP number). It's the number in white font on a purple background in the text field above your name. If pulled over for a traffic infringement, the record goes against the TDL number in the RTP database.

can't agree with you about using TDL to check into a hotel. I've successfully used my TDL when checking in at hotels in CM, Lamphun, CR, BKK, Pattaya, Hua Hin & Krabi.

As for updating TDL with new passport #, I renewed my passport around 2 1/2 years ago and when I visited my local Land Transport Office I was told cannot be done until it's time to renew the license.

At Cha Am DLT I asked the question and they told me not to worry about until it was time to renew.

You must have bad luck but your advice is wrong. Checked into a hotel in Bowin yesterday with TDL.

Never had a problem using my TDL to check in hotels for 10 years all over Thailand. Also Air Asia and others domestic airlines.

Travel a lot and use two star to five star hotels. Never used my passport after I got my TDL.

Agree no need to renew TDL with new passport until TDL expires.

I didn't say that hotels would not accept TDL for check in.

I stated TDL should not be accepted.

And indeed I checked this recently at 3 star hotel in Pattaya.

In any event what's wrong with pp.

Some folk seem to feel not using pp for various things is a badge of honor.

Also any hotel accepting TDL will not be checking your pp #.

Best summed up in post from Upnotover earlier where he stated...

"If a hotel will accept your licence they obviously don't care to do things correctly and will care even less if the passport number is valid or not."

Using your pp means that Immigration can track your movements. Using TDL or pink ID card means that Immigration don't receive any notification from hotels that you've been travelling around.

Such pride in being able to state "your advice is wrong"

It's not. Repeat hotel etc should not accept your TDL for check in. Fact they did changes nothing.

You same as others seem allergic to using pp.

And again use of TDL if that's your thing would not require updated pp #

Big deal. I travel often around Thailand and when I return to my home address in Bangkok there is no requirement from CW to file a new TM30.

The hotels checking you in with TDL are not doing TM30.

Common for Airbnb

I assume the answer to your question is that you have to go to the office that issues driver's licenses to do that.

I will say that my driver's license card does not include any reference to my passport. And, I've gotten a new passport since I was issued my current driver's license, and I did not update my passport information on it. I've had no problems with my driver's license. Of course, I've never been stopped by police who might check its validity, including any references to my passport, so I don't know if that's required.

Miss Ubonjoe. Thankful he was around when many of us needed advice. Sad you are such an angry know it all that on occasion ignores reality in Thailand and spouts nonsense as a moderator.

For once try and stick to what OP asked.

It is NOT necessary to update your TDL when you renew pp.

As others have agreed with.

Even some being told by transport office to go away and update with next TDL renewal.

The side issue of check into hotel with TDL is irrelevant and in any event even if a hotel allows that they Certainly will not ask to check TDL with pp.

Stop with off topic nonsense.
