It looks like mateship and a fair go really are going to be at the heart of Australia again.

Migrants to Australia will need to learn English and endorse the values of mateship and a fair go in order to become Australian citizens under a tough new test.

For the first time, the Federal Government has laid out what it regards as the 10 essential Australian values every citizen must embrace.

The 10 Australian values focus on "mateship and a fair go", including tolerance and mutual respect and compassion for those in need, dignity and freedom of the individual and the freedom of speech.

Migrants will also be tested on 20 questions drawn at random from a list of 200 questions. They must correctly answer at least 12 of the questions, which include three on the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.

How Aussie are you? Take the test

Some of the questions are downright misleading.

Who do Members of Parliament represent?

a. Australian businesses

b. The people of their electorate

c. Themselves

d. Their local footy club

Answers a,b or c are surely equally correct.

c probably being more equal than the rest!
