rats in my house ceiling

Featured Replies

I had the same problem with rats in my attic. I got rid of them completely without chemicals. I installed a strobe light with a timer at the access point on the ceiling. I switched it on for one hour every evening for only one week. After a few days, the infestation was gone, and it's still working after four years!

First of all don't allow pets in the house, pets should live outside. Place rat food (poison) in ceiling space.

Are you sure the noise is from rats? I had the same sounds which turned out to be a family of squirrels. I live in a rural siruation.

we have something in the roof especially in the wet season, thing is the foot steps are a lot heavier than rats but they do scurry about at times and it can start in the late afternoon. We have had specialists come and they threw a lot of baits into the ceiling, apparently they kill the rats and the body dries up and doesnt smell but while it does stop it for a while it soon returns. The thing is it is not all the time & only on occassions, if it is rate wouldnt they be there consatantly all year round

I think it's the same as I have. Lizards. I saw a couple larger ones, not the usual geckos after bugs. Need to get rid of them also. Rain does bring them in.

If you have them in your ceiling you better get someone out to repair the holes in the roof

I think I've seen your adds on Facebook 🤣

First thing to get sorted how are they getting into your roof space? overhanging trees- down pipes from the gutters?

some people will say the sticky traps are cruel , but these are rats ,vermin.

cause disease and could burn your house down if they chew the electrical wires.

Too true... This is what happens when they can't get out and get hungry. I was very lucky that the main consumer board tripped out before things got very hot. That said, the rat fried.

Those glue boards are the way to go. You don’t need to check them daily, you will still know when you’ve caught a rat, you will hear it thrashing periodically trying to get out the trap.

Yeah, until it dies and stinks.

They'll leave on their own. Show some compassion.

That definitely helps. We had a compost and city rats moved in.

Now we've got rats in the belfry.

Nothing wrong with animals living it up outdoors in this climate, as long as they're well cared for.

BUT why have animals at all if you don't want them around you?

Peanuts and peanut butter. Those sticky traps are cruel and usually end up with the rat chewing its own leg off. Nice!

Depends on whether you have access to the space above the ceiling. I would NOT use poison because the rats will die somewhere in your house and, believe me, you’ll want to move!

Since you have animals, let them take care of the problem. Your rats will soon move on.

We have lovely red tree shrews running through our roof. Don’t let your animals harass them. Squirrels do not usually get into rooves.

Could be a bird. Agree with some of the others; those glue boards are pretty rough especially if you catch an 'innocent' party just having a wonder. Rats are not nice, but surely better to kill the thing outright with a spring trap...

We are talking about a small enclosed ceiling space where it is unlikely that you have a big enough opening to put a whole live trap through.

Of course, previously I was not talking about indiscriminately littering a whole property plot with glue traps, which would be barbaric indeed.

I would if not for the fact they leave droppings which attract bacteria.I found one small opening in the roof awning after I sealed my porch awning. That will be sealed so they can find a new place to live. I don't mind a couple Geckos as they eat bugs.

They're rats. There's nothing especially barbaric about wanting them gone. The objective is simply to evict them, and some methods are undoubtedly preferable to others.

Our place has very limited ceiling space, and we'd been away for about a month. On returning, we discovered that "something" had thoughtfully chewed through plastic packaging to gain access to a stash of biscuits.

The following day we heard scraping noises overhead. Damn it.

A rat had somehow taken up residence in the ceiling void and, judging by the evidence, had also enjoyed unrestricted access to the kitchen and the rest of the house while we were away. Fortunately, the droppings were surprisingly minimal.

Out came the phone - a lazada order sticky plates on the way. The rat, however, seemed unimpressed by our efforts and managed to avoid them for several days.

Then one evening my wife and I arrived home and heard movement behind the fridge. We quickly positioned the sticky plates in front of the fridge, and I grabbed a stick and gave the area behind the fridge a vigorous rattling (not the wife).

The rat made a break for freedom, sprinted straight across the plates, and that was the end of its adventure.

My wife called the security guards because we're both a pair of city pussies who didn't fancy getting bitten by a rat, security came and took the rat. What happened next is a mystery, but given that it was a rat, I can't claim to have lost any sleep over it.

Unfortunately, a few days later we started hearing a lighter scraping sound overhead. Another rat. This one sounds smaller.

The plates are back out, and we've tried various tactics, all with limited success.

One complication is that this rat absolutely cannot be allowed to die somewhere inaccessible in the roof and spend the next few weeks decomposing above our heads. The plates have been in place for a week now, and the little blighter continues to avoid them with impressive determination.

So..... the campaign continues.

For now we're sticking with the plates rather than using a conventional trap, although we may need to upgrade the bait. Peanut butter is next on the list. So far we've tried cheese, bread, and seeds, none of which seem to hold much appeal for our elusive tenant.

At this point I'm beginning to suspect the rat this forums and knows our tactics - I've nick named it Harrisfan.

We had them in our ceiling. My wife's friend came round with a product that is like a soil but it is mixed with cat urine. Sprinkle that around in your ceiling and the rats will vacate.

I don't know what it was called, I can ask tomorrow. I think most Thais would know it.

I do not know if it will work but it is worth trying. Ask a freind who has cat(s) to give you the contents of a used litter tray and put that in your loft.

Are you guys seriously considering having your house smell of cats p!ss instead as a viable option ?

You don't smell it in your house at all. You spread the soil in the attic. Unless you are sleeping in the attic you would never know anything about it.

I'll have to take your word for it, but deliberately spreading cat-p!ss-soaked litter around my house feels like one of those ideas that's technically a solution, in the same way suggesting setting fire to the sofa is technically a way to get rid of the mother in laws pish-stains....

Never thought of that, will have to check, the only opening not covered(vertical about 15cm) is at the top of the bathroom wall under the carport and we do have tokays on that wall at times. We have rubber trees that over hang the roof over the carport/dogs area and a brick fence running along the border with the trees, our dogs tend to get upset when there is somethng running along either which is why we thought it may be squirrels.

Like rats, they only need an opening the size of a half dollar or less. In Thailand, with so many snakes, rats and lizards, it's not a good idea to have any trees overhanging or touching the house, as they'll quickly find ways in. You can see how small the opening is between a wall and molding and see how the geckos can slide right under.

We just got a kitten that I hope soon enough keeps them under control. i don't mind a couple but they can get out of hand fast here.

There are few squirrels here as they're slaughtered as meat as fast as possible, but my daughter in Texas has some in their roof, getting in after a cousin built a porch and left a tiny opening between the wall and ceiling.

Can't believe so many are recommending glue traps, awful indiscriminate things. I've caught birds, snakes, geckos, tokays, tree shrews etc in those things.

I used glue traps for mice once in China. Never again, after watching the little critters suffer for days, stuck to the glue.

In Thailand, I used galvanized box traps for mice in my apartment. They were dirt cheap at just about every hardware kiosk. Worked like a charm on rats and mice. Completely humane. (Though I almost got arrested for releasing them in the local park at QSNCC. But that's my bad.)

So they can p!sh and sh!t everywhere instead of the rats - great idea !!!

What do you suggest - male & female so we can have a whole litter of feral cats running around the loft ?

Perhaps I should introduce some other wild life, hornets & bees perhaps...

They're rats - anyway to get rid of them is a good way !!! (except poison which would have them decomposing in the roof space between floors)....

Just curious - why did you watch the little critters suffer for days ?.... isn't there a better way to 'get rid' of them - such as kill them quickly ? - I'm assuming thats what our security did with the one we caught - maybe ate it (tree rat I think).
