rats in my house ceiling

I used glue traps for mice once in China. Never again, after watching the little critters suffer for days, stuck to the glue.

Why would you actually watch them suffer instead if dispatching them right after they had been caught?

The same if you use a box trap, if you catch a rat, you would hardly release it somewhere, so this part of the job is the same for all kinds of traps you use, no?

The cats and maybe the dogs if they are hungry could eat the dead rats, which would not be good for them , in your situation i would use the sticky traps , they are about size of dinner plate ,two stu

First of all don't allow pets in the house, pets should live outside. Place rat food (poison) in ceiling space.

Are you sure the noise is from rats? I had the same sounds which turned out to be a family of squirrels. I live in a rural siruation.

First thing to get sorted how are they getting into your roof space? overhanging trees- down pipes from the gutters?

Indeed. As a rule of thumb: if you have rats (or even squirrels), you will have snakes.

How does one get mice in their apartment if it's several floors up?

... release the rat (and hope it's not 'a homing rat' 😁).

Once caught, it's your responsibility to put them out of their misery in a timely manner rather than watch them suffer for days.

I had rats in the roof at a property i used to rent. They were never ending! I used metal box traps and posion (BASF Storm). There was never any smell from dead rats and i never found any corpses. I slowed down the population, but never fully eradicated them.

Rats and mice can crawl up vertical as high as they want, usually once getting inside then using pipes and elevator shafts.

I've seen at least one rat riding IN the elevator!

We used to get mozzies on high floors after they rode the elevator too.

They'll find places to hide and breed most anywhere. I have a number of CD storage units and have found them using pieces of the CD sleeves as bedding, before I eliminated them from the house. I remember while living in the NYC area, in New Jersey, on one of my many visits to NYC, a few friends and I were walking down a street and I saw what i thought was a cat next to a building. It was the largest rat I ever saw.

Clever little buggers - they piggy-back until they can reach the elevator buttons.

In reality, they're exploratory little blighters and can climb - it's just nature at work.

A few years ago we went away for over a month and returned to find ants had somehow got into our apartment and chewed through an unopened packet of Ritz crackers. There was a trail leading from the kitchen, through the living room, out the front door and about 30 metres up the corridor towards the lift shaft.

Easy fix – vacuumed them up, cleaned away the scent trail with a Dettol-type cleaner, sprayed the area, and they never returned.

We've never had ants in our current house, nor rats before in any house or apt, but a nearby field has recently been cleared for construction. The local wildlife has had to move somewhere, and it seems our house made the shortlist - for the hi-so clean looking ones !!... One rat caught already; no idea how they got in.

We've had recent issues with rats chewing on power cables, all outside so far but ...

This has happened since we lost our semi-tame moggie to our increasingly busy road back in December ☹️

Madam has sourced replacement cats, 3 of them, 10 weeks old!! Photos coming soon whistling

Currently the rats are bigger than the cats!!

I had a neighbor who had a good sized Siamese cat that had a route around their house as well as mine. Great cat, would often show me the trophy kills. The neighbors moved, took the cat and the rats moved in 👎.

I have monitor lizards in my ceiling! Any advice on how to get rid of them?

Are you sure? You have reptiles with a length of 150 cm in your ceiling?!

At least you will have no problems with any rats at all 😅

I had similar noises & vainly threw in rat poison. It turned out to be a mother cat who'd given birth to several kittens.
