Why Can't Brits Say 'Jomtien' ?

Definitely. We all understand what Americans say despite their own variation of a word. We have a lot in common in many things not just language.

If you right back in history I think we would all be confused. However, the common dialect we have to day is simpler. Just the same the UK version is the one more in line with the history although go back far enough and none of us would understand a single word.

Webster is the US version of the English language. The USA has had the tendency to remove or change letters that make up a word but are silent when spoken. I don't think there is anything wrong with that but if we are talking definitives the UK version holds that title.

Both the US and UK use silent letters in many words. No one holds any title as both forms of English are correct, for them.Silent letters actually started in Germany, France and also Latin origins

I've never noticed it........but then maybe it's because I'm British...........

  • philipsharpe
    philipsharpe

...because the British developed the language, gave it to the Americans and watched them bastardise it.

I reiterate, seeing you might not have read this, knowing AI is your god...........

Yes, some Thai people might pronounce "Muay Thai" in a way that sounds like "moo-oi tie" to English speakers, though strictly speaking, the correct phonetic pronunciation in Thai is more like "moo-ay tie".

The pronunciation naturally varies in day-to-day conversation:

  • "Moo-ay" (The word for boxing/combat): When spoken quickly or with certain regional accents, the two vowel sounds in "Muay" can blend together. This results in something closely resembling "Moo-oi" or even "Moy".

  • "Tie" (The word for Thailand): This is pronounced identically to the English word for tying your shoe

Because the Thai language is heavily tonal, it can often sound quite different depending on the specific speaker. To native Thais, saying "Moo-oi Tie" is perfectly understood, and the martial art is a source of immense cultural pride in the country.

Your Ai link is wrong. Written by a farang.

UK English is correct. They invented the language. American English like erb instead of herb is retarded.

I learnt Thai from Thais. No Thai says Moo. You must have hearing issues pushing 70yo or they have a thick accent. Thai fighters say Moi. I trained with them bozo.

Your replies are always AI aided or assumptions, like just now. My hearing is just fine, and remember, I actually have a real Thai girlfriend who learned to speak Thai at birth. My martial arts teachers, 3 , all were well versed, long before you're conception, on things Thai. Your reading comprehension has always been lousy, along with your obvious skimming, as that AI plus the link tells it all. From THAIS. Cut the teen name calling, which further shows your level.

More nonsense from you. I learnt the language many years before you went. You're a novice.

All Thai boxers say Moi. Go to a gym fool. Stop embarrassing yourself.

You are a complete novice in Thailand. Never even been to Chiang Mai. Can't name 5 gyms you trained at. But according to you an expert on everything. A total narc. Proven wrong by world champions in the sport and won't admit it. It must be painful being in the same room as you.

I've trained in gyms 50 years, and you always talking about them shows you aren't doing anything but being a blowhard. Gym training means nothing here, as you don't need more than 1. Never being to Chiang Mai also means nothing. Anyone who has no responsibilities can travel by train and get out for a half hour and think they know everything about Thailand, which you don't.

I've worked out more in 20 years than you ever will, and actually had Thai friends before I moved here.

A world champion in a sport doesn't mean they're ability to speak Thai is perfect. Stop the hero worship about sports figures, as it also sounds like a teenager. You don't know all Thai boxers, nor understand what any say while talking. When a man's wife and another's girlfriend, who's nickname is Kuay, say the words, I think listening to them is more valid than an exaggerator who brags about Thailand and most of his information comes from AI, which anyone living in Portugal can do.

Constantly calling a person a narc, when you obviously don't understand the term without looking at AI, makes you look like a moron. Try educating yourself on something before you comment on the subject.

Why Can't Brits Say 'Jomtien' ?

Same reason many can't say 'think' (fink) or 'isn't it' (in'it) or 'he's' ('eez a real geezer, in'it)

47 minutes ago, Photoguy21 said:

True, but I think over the years (decades) all the variants, when spoken, are being spoken more quickly - in some cases almost slurring words together. If you watch a movie like Carey Grant, or someone from that genre/day, whether American or British or Canadian, what I notice is they speak slower and more articulately. The difference is more than just changing common parlance or additional slang, there's a change in tone and speed. At least that's my own observation.

49 minutes ago, Photoguy21 said:

I do understand your Americanisms but the definitive English is the UK English. To jog your memory, The UK had a long history before the USA was discovered. Just a point you may like to take into account.

And like the French and Latins before you, nobody cares. The language will go where it goes without our input. Remember, English is an amalgamation of Celtic, Nordic, German, French and other languages. Add to that more recent modifications from Spanish, Tamil, Hindi and LA Valley Girl. Nobody asked the MLA for permission.

No, just the fact you aren't good as comprehending what others say, so you think they're lying or exaggerating. Most adults by the time they reach their 60's know quite a lot about certain things, especially if they didn't stop reading after high school. Maybe that's where your problem lies.

After any schooling you might have had, you stopped learning, stopped reading and go mostly by other's opinions you think are gospel. Most of us who wanted to increase our knowledge on things we found interesting, went one step further and read all we could on them.

I have my own passions. Hunting, fishing, psychology, music, nutrition, weight training, history and animals. I don't call myself an expert no matter how much I know. I just know a lot about them.

Trying to think how others are thinking can't work, as you aren't them. If you didn't assume so much what would you have to say here? Every member you've interacted with you try to put down, for things they enjoy, which isn't any of your business.

I'm more a gym rat than you'll ever be and all you talk about is how many gyms you visit in Thailand. Visiting a gym doesn't mean you're working out in one, as I've seen thousands of people while working in 6 and working out in a hundred, who just sit on benches , machines and bikes looking at their phones. If I go to a town to stay I'll find a gym to train, but I won't go talking about it to anyone because they wouldn't care.

I've been to many provinces here but that means nothing to anyone else, so why would you brag about where you go? You again, haven't any responsibilities. unlike husbands and fathers do here. People who can travel usually don't have children, or they've already grown and left, so they can do whatever they want, but bragging about it falls on deaf ears.

If you wanted to be a troll, you've succeeded with flying colors. if you want to reduce your negative reputation, try acting civil or you'll be looked at just like that other weirdo is. make a choice.

You're a legend. Expert on every topic. All those world champions are idiots! Fred knows more than them from an Isaan village!

Obviously you didn't read what I wrote, or possibly comprehend it, as you just repeated yourself from your last post.

I wouldn't go to a world champion fighter to learn how Thai is spoken correctly. I would, as I have for decades, listen to Thais.

Maybe you didn't get the memo, but I wasn't born in an Isaan village.

Wrong as per usual. I post facts. You're such a moron you don't even know what a fact is. I produced a MT world champion as proof. Not only that he is highly fluent in Thai unlike you. He has fought over 25 years all over the world. You posted CoPilot which is wrong. You have zero credibility. JWP is a very humble guy unlike yourself. You're a low achiever yet you have a hugo ego. Your biggest supporters are 80yos on an anonymous forum who have never set foot in a MT gym. You live in a village 30kms from 7. Posting 100 hours a week of complete nonsense. You barely speak the language. Barely seen the country.

Lifting weights has nothing to do with Muay Thai. Most fighters don't do much weight lifting. They do jogging and skipping as cardio is needed for fights. They need to make weight so don't want to bulk up.

But you have read books too on women. You should add that in too.

Such a fragile ego you have.

You post AI and other's opinions, period. Calling someone who's obviously, even from this forum alone, much smarter than you've shown a moron, has you looking like a microcephalic idiot.

How would you know how much Thai I can speak seeing we've never met?

That a fighter can speak Thai doesn't mean he can pronunciate it correctly, as a native Thai can.

What I posted was spot on, as I also posted a link from a Thai, and there are many more. I also know actual Thais very well, and have for decades, who know more than you ever will about the Thai language.

Calling someone who's raised 6 children and had jobs you couldn't function at a low achiever also has you looking very small. Those who support me are smart enough to understand what I say. Those, like you, who don't, are the ones who haven't the knowledge to argue a point with real evidence, so you resort to teen name calling and more assumptions.

That MT fighter you drool over doesn't even know you're alive, so your Kardashian hero worship doesn't make him a Thai language expert, but Thai locals do.

You've proven what and who you are here many times, and your reputation shows it. You aren't very bright and all you have is AI to try and prove facts others post wrong, which you've never done, so it might be best to just quit, as every reply has you sinking deeper into that hole.

Another long post, all nonsense. You're a low achiever stuck in Sisaket. I learn from World Champs. I have trained with them.

You are a battler making up your own theories. Sad really. 70yo man lost in Isaan. Nothing to do.

Most fighters of all fighting sports use weights to build strength, endurance and hardness. You haven't a clue. I've actually been in world class gyms working and working out where pro fighters trained with weights. Weights don't always "bulk up", so you again don't know what you're talking about. There are specific ways to train with weights that increase punching strength. I know because i trained both.

Reading books on women because i wanted to understand them better is a hell of a lot better than calling them dogs, so you should stay away from that topic also.

How can I have a fragile ego if I've trained for over 50 years? This would mean I have good self esteem, no insecurity whatsoever, quite the opposite of someone who needs to brag about going to so many gyms but is likely only entering them and talking trash on his phone here.

This should be promoted to a thread of its own, like the word play one and "what are you eating?", etc.

Nothing – its usage is slightly different from pavement; it's a vocabulary question.

The truth is Muay is pronounced Moi as all Thai fighters say that. Confirmed on the Rogan podcast by a 10x champ.

You will never wake up to yourself and learn though.

About talking quickly, why the eff do most radio ads, and some on TV, end with someone reading T&Cs as quickly as possible. I know it is the equivalent of the 'small print' but sometimes it gets riduculously fast. The Advertising Standards in UK need to address this, especially on ads aimed at older people. Rant over!

Yes, I agree, really annoying but it must be some legal requirement to cover themselves. Not just UK by the way, the American TV channels do the same.

So please, how do the meanings of Pavement and Footpath differ in English, not American?

I am guessing that a Pavement is along the side of a road, wheras a Footpath could be along the side of a canal, and not paved as such.
