Why Can't Brits Say 'Jomtien' ?

Susie Dent on Countdown's origins of words explains a lot.

Watch her You Tubes on the origins of swear words. Seeing a beautiful woman explaining where 4uuk, 5hit or c...t came from is so sexy.

She was a lexicographer and editor for the Oxford University Press long before she appeared on telly; she's always been known for her work on etymology, etc. She also has a master's in German – now she has a Phd in "Notta-lotta-people know that"

...because the British developed the language, gave it to the Americans and watched them bastardise it.

There is one stop sign in American English and another in British English.

...and you miss the point that it is not the language that is important if you saw this you'd know exactly what it meant... You don't read it; you recognise it.

I'm guessing British pronunciation reflects older French influence.. .?

Ok while we on about pronunciations, why can't Americans say Gloucester, Greenwich, Worcester, Bicester, Towcester, Wymondham, Aylesbury and many many more.

hugely inaccurate... premises are wrong – 'pavement' is originally the word for the hard, metalled surface of a road – so 'sidewalk' is more accurate - most of what he is referring to are infact the original old English versions.

What is wrong with footpath?

Especially Brit Youtubers consistently call it 'Jontiem'. Is it a form of dyslexia? They seem to be the only nationality that consistently screws up such a simple word.

Simply, just because they are Brits. It´s much more important to get a sword on your should and be called Sir for the rest of your life. 😂

Yeah, that´s exactly why, as it includes all the ingredients to not care. :-)

er? It is shouldER, where the movement you need is situated.

I get a kick out of foreigners that think they pronounce ANY Thai word correctly.

Unless you get the tones right, you're not. Even if you nail all the vowels and consonants.

I was recently playing around with the AI conversation translator on my Samsung. Speaking some very basic Thai as I do it didn't understand one word. Weirdly Thai people often do. They should have a setting for dumb f-rang.

a dialect involves unique grammar

In a sentence I might say "in the end"; my friend from Suffolk England says "in the finish" . So I would say that might be a dialect? Not an accent.

Is below an accent or dialect?

This is supposed to be an accent.

Moy is how it sounds.

Oh, you are one of the people who teach English on an international forum, where there are many non-native speakers. Brit perhaps?

And in this case, it was just missing two letters. Oki Doki, go on strong boy!

You are wrong. I followed the sport for 10 years. Watched live events. It has a Moi sound.

American English is correct English, just as English from the UK is, and Australian English is correct for Australia. It's regional, and correct for each region.

It, along with foods, architecture and cultures are what makes the world interesting. American English is actually the largest taught worldwide.

My school owner friend here always tries to find native English speakers from America, so his children don't adopt the accent of the British style. He does hire them also, as well as some from Cameroon and the Philippines, as any English the children learn will help them in life. He went to America for a year to learn English himself. Both English styles are "correct".

I met a student at Chulalongkorn who spoke fluent English. I was initially confused about her English and thought she was from the southern part of the United States, because of her accent. Then I found out she had never been outside of the Thailand and that her English language professor (?), teacher (?) at Chula was from Arkansas, which explained the southern accent she had.

Or maybe it’s because we invented the language.

Go watch a fighter being interviewed on youtube. It is Moi not Moo. You really are clueless.

You sound very ignorant of the language. Countless videos of John Wayne Parr on Youtube. He knows how to say the word being 10 times world champion. I trained in Thailand myself.

The students who come to my friends school hear accents from Cameroon (UK), Philippines, America, Scotland, Germany and England. When you hear them speak, they don't have the English accent but American, no southern, Brooklyn or Bostonian but General American, how you hear on TV stations and most movies.

No better way to hear how things are supposed to sound Thai than listening to a Thai born wife or girlfriend speaking to her family or friends.
