damn soi dogs

I'll give you the quick run down.

Watch the dogs behavior.

Is it approaching you? Is there a pack around it. (Rule 1 Always walk with a stick or tree branch.)

How aggressive is the barking or movement? (If agreesive then stop, face the dog but stay calm. Do Not raise the stick.)

If it continues aggressive barking and moved rapidly towards you. ( This is when you have to raise the stick, stamp your foot, and make loud noise)

Understand that if one dog in a pack is barking at you and you raise the stick early all the other pack dogs who will fight will usually activate to back up their friend.

The sneak around the back trick. I simply turn around, face them and walk backwards. After a little distance the situation is usually diffused

If they are barking you are ok. Just don't run or lack confidence. Growling or silently walking towards you, different story. I have had some nervous moments in Thailand with street dogs I can't lie, but my main worry is the increase of Pitbulls and Staffordshire Bull Terriers as pets. If they start breeding with the generic Thai street dog then that could be a problem. Muscled up packs of street dogs? No thanks!

That's already happening, in my part of Isaan, doberman and rochweiller seem to have got in the mix...

I havent come across a pack -- max 2 dogs I've seen.

They don't seem like they want to attack. I think they're barking because I got too close and scared them.

Just walking away from them quietly should do the trick most of the time.

One continued barking even after I crossed the street, but it wasn't coming toward me.

But still damn annoying. You have to look over your shoulder when you go for walks.

Pretending to pick up a rock or waving a stick usually scares them off......but one of my kids is a dog handler and told me in no uncertain terms that if a dog really goes all in ..................your only option is a knife or a gun.

During the hot season you have to navigate around several soi dogs to enter the local convience stores

You're lucky, When I went to one of the 7-11s near me last week, there was quite a big dog asleep inside the 7-11 on the floor beside the till area and none of the staff batted an eyelid.

Yeah me too in front of my 7-11 sometimes there's a dog sleeping there.

But they don't worry me too much.

Dogs are smart enough to know to be cautious when there's too many people around.

It's mostly on quiet streets at odd hours when there are not many people around that worries me.

If your out at night you can use a small tactical flashlight to keep them at bay. This guy has a channel showing them in action. During the day I generally carry a collapsible hiking stick when walking around/ hiking etc.

I think if you walk the same route/area routinely all the dogs will know who you are and whether you are a threat.

BUT it only takes one aggressive action on your part to scare them and identify yourself as a threat. Once done this action cannot be remedied.

Yet the issue remains largely unresolved in many areas.

That's Thailand for you, thousands of issues are acknowledged by the Authorities, by nothing gets done about them. A full scale, full funded, Nationwide catch and sterilization programme, with appropriate follow up programs, would substantially improve the issue within 2 dog generations. Other Countries have managed it, so can Thailand, but it will not happen.

You have to be very brave, or more likely foolish, to be wandering around at night, on foot, in areas where you know that there are soi dogs.

Never make eye contact with them. Worse at night or when owner is with them

Thank goodness Thailand also has modern condos with pools, gyms, gardens, security and a 7-Eleven at the front gate, with a shopping mall next door. 😄

Some expats deliberately choose to live down isolated village sois surrounded by packs of dogs, then act shocked that… there are packs of dogs. Pick your location wisely and half the battle’s already won.

I bike most days and have been bitten twice. I have mounted a taser on my handlebars. It makes a crackling sound which scares the dog…like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yZpCPtmYJI
It doesn’t shoot out any prongs and there is no need to touch the dog with it…the sound is enough to scare it away. You can buy it on Lazada:
https://www.lazada.co.th//products/i5778676361-s24600012199.html?spm=a2o42.cart.0.0.6cd46108Lb5zqB&urlFlag=true&tradePath=,cartPriceDrop,cart

I’ve used mine many times. I leave it turned all the time and when a dog starts to bother me I just press the button to make the crackling sound. Very effective.
You can mount the taser with an original Quadlock or Quadlock clone from Shopee:

The problem is also the tourists or locals that feed them right in front of the house or neighborhood. This keeps them there annoying anyone who lives nearby and they just drive away. Either feed them further away, take them home to care for them, or just Stop doing it. Your “good deed” is not good for us.

Best thing to do is totally ignore them look the other way no eye contact

That's what works for me, most of the time. And no panicking as they often only run and bark as a warning, without real intent do do harm.

Yep, I used to have one of those farang Good Samaritans near my place, and he was the reason why people got chased and risked crashing their motorbikes (it probably happened), cats got slaughtered, etc.

Those dogs are way more aggressive in the hot season. Luckily, our soydogs are neutered. You can get neutered by calling the BMA.

Whenever this subject comes up, you'll inevitably find people on forums suddenly transforming into canine behaviour experts - the Dog Whisperer. They'll tell you to "act like the alpha", project confidence, or somehow psychologically dominate a pack of stray dogs.

T'was only a matter of time...

The best way to stop a pack of dogs is to become the Alpha dog and 'bark' louder and take control of the pack!
I've used a mini-airhorn for years when riding motorcycle around the US. It clipped onto the handlebars, so it was right there when needed. And in farm country, it was often needed to keep the dogs from chasing.
One good 'bark' from an air horn says 'Hey! I am the BIG DOG! Do not mess with me!'

I just spotted 3 dogs.

A street vendor was feeding them.

But what I don't get is why these dogs are so fat. Surely, they can't be getting that much free food from street vendors? Strange looking dogs.

A taser from Lazada never fails.

Do they sell dog masks on Lazada?
Any Halloween popup shops?

I'm thinking of putting on a dog mask to mess with these dogs.

In my neighborhood in Isan that's a good way to get bit, I tried it and had to lay the stick down and back away after being surrounded by aggressive dogs, the first dog reacted more aggressively when I raised the stick, to the point where I had to beat it on the road in front of him to keep from getting bit, then other dogs came running at all of the noise and joined the first dog. It was scary. Bending over to act like you are picking up rocks works most of the time, also acting like you have a slingshot and are pulling the sling back, but maybe those things only work in rural areas?

Pretty much what I told my daughter last week when I walked her home from school. Every day we have our dogs follow us to and from the school, and sometimes fights occur. Our dogs get ahead of us many times, looking for other dogs, as we pass an Army camp close by that has a few dogs, and they always come out to investigate when we pass.

The dogs go after ours, and when they get ahead of us, the other dogs continue to follow us, many times coming close. I stop and walk towards them, saying NO firmly, and they usually stop or back off. My daughter asked me what do we do if the dog attacks, and I told her I kill it. I love animals but if it comes to anyone or anything regarding my family, it's going to be them with extreme prejudice. I'll surely be bitten, but dogs have no business attacking people.

True, if you're going to raise a stick, it's to hit the dog to kill it, as any aggression shown will be matched by theirs.

I was going to a house near here with my ex wife awhile ago, as the boy working for the landowner cut my daughter and I off in a scooter and we ran into him, which was totally his fault.

We went looking for the boy, and found out later he just worked for this man and of course that meant we weren't going to get reimbursed for the scooter damage.

No one was home this time, and there were 4 dogs on the property. They let us pass when we went looking for the landowner, but on the way back they came after us, so my ex picked up one of those hole diggers lying around, and was raising it towards the lead dog, and I told her to stop. I walked towards the dog talking to it, and it backed off a bit. We continued towards the car and they kept getting closer, so i repeated the move until we made it to the car.

The same with a bear. You run you're chased, you stand your ground, they'll usually back off. Hopefully that is.
