A White House pool reporter said several loud bangs were heard inside the hotel ballroom during the event.

Moments later, members of the United States Secret Service rushed into action with guns drawn, shouting “shots fired” as they moved people away from the area.

Pool reporters said they were quickly pushed back and held by Secret Service personnel while agents worked to secure the scene.

While reporters were being held, some overheard agents saying that a suspected gunman had been taken into custody.

Guests crouch as chaos unfolds

Images taken inside the Washington Hilton, where the dinner is traditionally held, showed guests crouching or taking cover after the sounds were heard.

Security personnel were seen helping some attendees evacuate from the ballroom as the situation unfolded.

Several prominent figures were present at the event. The pool report said Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was seen limping as he moved through the area, while Jeanine Pirro was escorted past reporters by security.

FBI director shielded companion

Among those seated near the disturbance was Kash Patel, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

A journalist seated nearby said Patel reacted immediately when the sounds were heard. According to the account, he covered his girlfriend with his body and dropped to the ground as the situation unfolded.

After several minutes, one of Patel’s security agents signalled to other agents in the room that the FBI director was safe.

As guests began cautiously standing again, Patel was seen sending messages on his phone.

When reporters attempted to ask him what had happened, he was quickly escorted out of the room by security.

Investigation continues

Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the source of the loud bangs or whether shots were actually fired.

However, agents at the scene indicated that a suspected shooter had been detained as security continued to manage the situation.

Officials are expected to provide further details once the incident has been fully assessed.

Even so, the presence of the president and other senior officials prompted heightened protective measures from security teams responsible for safeguarding the event.

Law enforcement officers moved rapidly to contain the situation outside the hotel and secure the surrounding area. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the suspected gunman.

No injuries among dinner attendees were immediately reported.

Dinner programme expected to continue

Despite the disruption, organisers said the event itself would eventually resume.

Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents' Association, addressed guests in the ballroom during the incident. She told the audience that the evening’s programme would continue at some point once the situation was fully assessed.

The annual dinner is one of Washington’s most prominent political and media gatherings, drawing government officials, journalists and other invited guests from across the country.

Authorities were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting late on Saturday.

Trump's appearance would have been a political disaster. This looks like a stunt for Trump to steal the show and duck out without opening his mouth. Was it orchestrated by Trump or one of his political hacks that couldn't talk him out of it?

Most likely one out of the deranged camp which is probably a good thing since they have no clue how to use a firearm.

I remember the actual Reagan shooting outside this same hotel when at first people debated the political motives of the shooter when it turned out he did it to express his unrequited love for Jodie Foster.

Anyone surprised that the shooter was a 30-year-old California man? CBS reports The suspect in Saturday night's shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner had a shotgun and handgun on him. Donald Trump via Truth Social released the photo above. The man was outside the function and was running towards the room. Not particularly intelligent and violent. He shot a Secret Service agent in the chest.

On a lighter note, Trump is handling this rather well and with discipline and focus. This should bolster his standing. The man holds up well under stress like this.
