Sonthi may run for premier

BangkokPost.com from reports

Army Chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratklin on Wednesday denied that he had decided to contest the next election in central Lop Buri province.

Reports circulating in political circles said the army chief was likely to run for the post of prime minister by leading a political party based in his old Special Forces stomping grounds.

Sonthi, who is also the leader of last year's military coup which ousted the then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, only said on Wednesday that he has never said that he would contest the next election in Lop Buri.

But he also has never said he wouldn't.

He said he would have to wait until October before he could be certain about his political future, a number of newspapers reported.

Sonthi said many private firms had approached him to become their chairman by offering him a monthly salary between 800,000 and 1.5 million baht (very roughly, $23,500 to $44,000), so he was still choosing between entering politics or joining a firm.

Gen Sonthi denied he had been approached to lead a new party

gets the gig and is overthrown in a military coup :o

I hope he does run. That should effectively split the vote and weaken the chances of whichever other candidate is most similar.
