There aren't four million unemployed youth.

In the UK, there are 743,000 unemployed young people aged 16 to 24, reflecting an unemployment rate of 16.4% according to official Office for National Statistics data for March to May 2026. [1]

Thanks @bannork for checking that. Not sure where I got 4 million 'youth'. The BBC says there are 11 million people of working age in the UK not in work.

"About a quarter of the working age population - those aged 16 to 64 - do not currently have a job. That's about 11 million people."

So I stand corrected on the youth figure. Still, one-quarter of working age people in general out of work is pretty staggering. But as you say, that could include people studying at University or vocations.
