If there is a mall around the corner, do the government planning department / the mayoral team that oversee planning think that another mall opening around the corner might not be the wisest use of real estate space ?

I do understand most of these are now using the mall, cheap labour, to actually sell the condo and hotel around it - but still it just getting annoying now.

Go to see cities like Paris, and you don't have to be wall to wall malls.

On Khao Phansa we decided to head out to Ban Bua Thong to the plant markets and pick up a load more for our garden. Easy drive as it was a holiday on the 30th only 40 minutes to the place. Got some creepers, some hangers, and some orchids. Found a great place for boat noodles. Very old fashioned with the super small bows, "see how many you can eat". We go through 9 bowls at 14B each. Had some Kap Mu to go along with the soup, and 10 sticks of satay as a side.

On the way home wife wanted to go make merit at the old temple and stupa on Koh Kret, it was an easy and fun stop. Left at 9am and were home just after 3pm. Good day out.

With some imagination and energy Thailand is never boring.

A lot of it actually is.

I got bored here pretty quickly because it did not have the things I liked to do in my home country that I grew up with. It's also hard to do them with the language barrier and around people that are not on the same page. Another big one was lack of intellectual stimulation. When political discussion and critique in general is shunned there is not a lot to talk about if you are not from a "fruit selling" background. The upper educated classes seem insulated and hard to penetrate. The difference was a novelty at first but soon became boring. Sure, there are many new things to do, scuba diving, new restaurants, travel, etc, but after awhile the novelty wears off. It's just not the same kind of contentment and new experiences you seem to be looking for. A lot of it actually seems superficial, almost narcissistic, like superficial relationships, fake kind of "fun wrapper" experiences, a new biking trail, etc.

Most expats I have met so far in Thailand seem boring. It feels taboo to talk about anything stimulating and important for fear of offending someone. Feels fake. I like the USA better where people talk crap regularly without hesitating. Could be a cultural thing, I'm not sure.

Motorbiking, restaurants, markets, trains and gym. Those 5 things are good.

The average farang is a dropkick and the average Thai wants to eat chilli.

Who do you people meet and talk to ? I've met plenty of folks, intelligent, great conversationalist, and we had a blast when we got together. Considering I'm anti-social, that says a lot.

The landscape, restaurants/coffee shops does it for me. Motorbiking, just locally, as my back isn't up for long drives any more.

The neighborhoods, canals are all fun to knock around in, along with strolls in nature.

No different than anywhere else in the world, relative to a few factors.

Hobbies are a personal choice. Found a couple new ones, and only can't have firearms vs USA. I don't miss those at all.

Drones are illegal, the way I use them, and that would probably be the same in USA, so moot subject.

Some people are better off here as tourists. Take Rocky for an example. He thinks he knows everything about the country. Yet knows nothing of the culture.

There is a giant chasm between those that come as budget tourists and those who live here. Your perspective on things change once you leave your own county and experience the totally different pace and style of life here. Does it take some getting used to? Sure it does like anything else. Do you ever feel anger or frustration? Sure do, but in reality I felt like that more in the west. As my kids say, Dad come and stay as long as you like but remember your home is Thailand, you fit in better there, and they are right. Tell you though with one in La Jolla and one in Sausalito it is a fun stay when going back to California.

I avoid them as much as possible. Maybe 10% are ok but many look "deplorable".

I can see why many guys end up drinking here and lose the plot. I think it's from being here and not something they carried in with them. I was knocking around central Pattaya this evening and just ended up drinking because there was not much else to do. If I was really stuck here I could see that easily becoming a habit and losing the plot at some point. From what I hear it's common for people to end up drinking all the time and just drinking the days & nights away. I guess I could buy a boat and go sailing or something if I had access to that sort of wealth, but that's not realistic.

You are right for many. Why people join gyms etc or go motorbiking. Millions of bored retirees with no hobbies.

Speaking of the Mug from Melbourne who championed this topic, there’s a revealing pattern with certain forum regulars like that geezer: they’re online all bloody day. Not just having a quick look, but replying within minutes, dropping another post and checking back constantly. And when they’re still hammering away at 1 or 2am, you do start wondering what they’ve actually got going on in the real world. At some point, it stops looking like being “active” and starts looking like having bugger-all else to do.

Then there’s the constant misery and sniping they persist with. Every topic is rubbish, everyone else is an idiot, and some harmless discussion inevitably becomes another excuse for a moan or a row. They seem to need the next argument almost as much as the next notification. The forum starts looking less like a hobby and more like a substitute for an actual life.

You also get the endless “foreigners in Thailand are all bloody awful” routine from them. Apparently every other expat is a prat, a sex tourist, a cheapskate, a drunk, a retiree with no social skills, or some other variety of human detritus, while they alone are the exception. Every foreigner becomes another opportunity for a sneer, a generalisation or a smug little lecture about how everyone else is doing Thailand wrong. It’s quite a talent, really, to live among thousands of other people in a foreign country and apparently dislike every single one of them.

Then comes the binge-and-disappear routine. Post like a bat out of hell for an hour or three, disappear for forty five minutes to have another pull, then return and start the circus again. They rarely seem interested in what anyone else thinks either. It’s more like an open microphone for whatever grievance is rattling around their head at that particular moment. And so the vitriol of trolling topics like this one, seemingly little more than another expression of the OP’s own misery and depression, will no doubt continue.
