281 mass shootings (up to 31st July)

More than 1 a day.

Didn't see much reporting on the other 280 events.

Only a very backward country would tolerate such carnage.

Drill down into the FBI statistics and you'll discover that most of those "mass shootings" are actually gangland shootouts. And if you scratch a little further, you'll find a racial correleation.

As if it's even possible to get the gangs to give up their guns... Most of them, by virtue of felony convictions, are already barred from owning weapons. That doesn't stop 'em.

So, what would you suggest?

LOL..... major lack of logic.

If the percentage of citizens with guns was 3% (UK) instead of 32% (US) is it not logical that the availability of guns to criminals would be greatly reduced.

An estimated 200,000 to 380,000 guns are stolen from private gun owners in the United States each year. There is no exact live total of all cumulative historical stolen firearms currently unrecovered in the country, as many thefts go unreported and tracking varies widely by jurisdiction.

...... AND .......

While there is no exact total count of every single time a stolen gun is fired or used in a crime nationwide, studies show that stolen firearms are nearly nine times more likely to be used in criminal activity compared to other legal firearms.

If only Charlie had use his influence to curtail the ownership of guns in the States, he might be alive today.

Don't be a gang banger or piss anyone off, and USA is as safer or safer than anywhere.

The USA per capita has 5-6 times the number of gun-related murders Australia has.

Since semi-automatic weapons were banned in Australia 30 years ago, we have had THREE mass shootings.

Definition: Incidents where 4 or more victims are killed by gunfire in a public place, explicitly excluding gang violence, armed robbery, or domestic disputes.

Average per year: 6 to 12 incidents per year.

The USA is safe? Is that why schoolkids get trained to hide under desks?

Americans are too addicted to their guns to learn by example.

45 yrs in the USA, and nobody has shot me, nor have I shot anyone. I never really needed to pull out any handgun I was carrying. Go figure.

As stated before, don't be a gang member, or piss people off, and you've no worries. Exercising a bit of common sense always helps.

Never have my brothers, or anyone I know, been shot or shot anyone, or needed their firearms for defense. Brothers are 78, 74, 66, lived in different areas, and myself, with few exception, lived in economically challenged areas.

Stop watching MSM, with couple exceptions, all murders and violent crime have continually dropped year after year the past few decades.

You better move back to OZ, as TH's homicide rate is about 2.5X that of OZ. Run along now ... PLEASE

I think all the countries are the same, but many don't publicise the deaths and attacks.

In the last day or two in Thailand we've had 2 Russian teens killed and a woman with her head cut off, and that's just the novelty kills that made the English press.

Stabbings, rapes and violent assults are through the roof in the UK and EU. Just too many to report.

Americans don't really adore violence. To some it just happens. Americans are less likely to sit around when others target us, and respond accordingly. The old west started a lot where self defense was necessary. It's sometimes inevitable that things happen but isn't desired. That many own firearms, although the majority are used for hunting and target shooting, shows that we won't take crap when crap hits the fan. Yes it, like most other countries are founded on violence, and we aren't going to give in to another that thinks they can target us.

Americans are completely normal when it comes to gun possession, and the strict gun control laws assure that pathological super freak maniacs don't own an excessive amount of guns. LOL.

You can only shoot one at a time, so once you have permission for one, there is no reason to stop you owning 100.

I noticed something intriguing. The two good guys with a gun missed every shot.

Kinda implies that guys with guns can't all shoot straight when it is needed.

Yes, most American gun owners own a couple of guns, mostly hunters and target shooters. There are those like that one who are collectors. Guns, especially some of them more than others, are works of art, and are like any other art collection. The amount of guns owned has nothing to do with using them in an unsafe or illegal manner., it only takes one nut with a gun to kill many people.

In certain states carrying a gun is practically a religious duty, and Idaho is indeed one of them, and it has been that way since pioneer days. If I was trying to figure out in which state would it be more likely that a regular person is carrying a firearm, Idaho would rate"most likely."

You just don't get it , do you? You homicide rate is so high because you have access to all types of weapons. Do you really think the founding fathers envisaged semi-automatics?

I have owned up to 4 firearms, for hunting. The most powerful were a 5 shot 0.222, bolt action. A pump-action 12 gauge.

It seems any whackjob in America can own handguns. In Australia, to own a handgun as a private individual means compulsory membership of a pistol club, 6 months probation, regular practice requirements, and stringent qualifying checks. Nothing above 0.45 calibre, which itself requires a special police exemption.

Face it, handguns and semi-automatics have only one purpose - killing people as quickly and efficiently as possible. The stats say your nutjobs take full advantage.

One nut with a semi-automatic can kill a lot more people than one armed with a bolt action rifle.

As you were a former gun seller, please explain how your opinions on this thread can be objective.

You really do not understand America. /sarc

See, we need our guns just in case the government becomes repressive. Madison and Jefferson knew a government with an army armed with muskets could take away our freedom. So they wrote the 2nd Amendment so that we can have muskets, too.

Okay, they didn't know one day the world would have semi-autos like the AR-15, usually fitted with a 30 rd mag shooting 5.56 NATO or .223 with a muzzle velocity of 3200 fps. Nor did they know one day citizens could legally purchase, albeit with a 20 second online check with the FBI, a Barrett M107A1 .50 caliber BMG round (pic attached), with greater energy at 2000 yards than a Dirty Harry .44 Magnum point black. Plop down about $12,000 on the counter and that M107Ai is yours.

But "home defense", you know?

In terms of standing up to a repressive government, neither Madison nor Jefferson could have imagined things like an A-10 Warthog with a GAU8 cannon that fires depleted uranium rounds, which kind of obviates any citizen-held weapon from a musket to an AR-15. Advantage: repressive government.

Now I'm a hypocrite, because when I saw how crazy the US was becoming---crazy enough to elect Trump---I went out and got myself an AR-15, a SigP229 9mm, a SigP227 .45ACP, a couple of Walther PPKs in .380, and a few other pieces, along with thousands of rounds of ammo. Of course they are all safely stored in my US home, and I was trained by mil types in their use, plus had some issued to me while working abroad in the Middle East, but I do feel slightly more comfortable when I visit the US knowing I have these things and have carried and used them in my work. I wish nobody had an AR-15, because any loon can shoot up a school or church or synagogue or Las Vegas concert or Walmart and take out a few dozen fellow humans in under a minute. Sadly, there are upwards of 25 million AR-15s in public hands in the US. It's kind of late to stop the slaughter. The handguns are more the weapon of choice for road rage. We Americans are flexible and arm ourselves appropriately for

the task at hand. Shoot up a school? AR-15. Road rage? Semi-auto handgun.

Because I see things as they are, without prejudice towards any group, and know what should be done to help curb the gun problems, as many of us do who live or lived in the US. That I'm a gun person doesn't mean I don't know what's going on or what should be done, as I've explained many times in similar threads.

One person with two handguns can kill a lot of people also. Getting the guns out of the mentally ills hands is the problem.

Suicidal people will use any method they can to take their lives, even though a gun makes it easier than some others, and suicides are the highest form of gun violence, followed by gangs and domestic. Semi autos are easier to kill many and limiting the magazine amount can be a huge curb, as no one needs more then 5 rounds for hunting, which is the smallest capacity for an AR-15 rifle..

A semi auto is also a good gun for hunting and target shooting, with a follow up shot on any escaping animals quick. handguns are usually used for protection, but also for hunting and target shooting. Yes, there can be more stringent rules for gun ownership, as I've already mentioned. The problem is still keeping them out of the mentally ills hands. Mandatory locked gun safes is another way, along with a 21 year minimum age purchase and a psychological done before purchase.

Which is why consistent practice is a good idea. Some panic, especially when someone's shooting at you, much the same as when teenagers are sent to wars and never shot a gun.

Guns and ammo are a bit heavy, there's a limit to your ability to carry weapons.

Wonder if this one's real or another questionable 'event'.

Giveaway is if the parent has to 'get into character' before interviews like this guy did:

Stephen Paddock had 24 weapons in his Las Vegas suite, although admittedly not on his person. Columbine shooters had 4 each, with hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
