It's not that I haven't encountered very rude behavior before here (especially with baht bus drivers, etc.) but what I'm talking about here is a noticeable (to me) pattern of increase. That's all.

I don't live in Pattaya anymore, so can't really say. I used to have a "weekend" apartment way back (1998 to 2004), the baht bus drivers were definitely more aggressive back then, almost like a mafia organisation, untouchable.

Still not friendly but not that avaricous anymore.

Obviously, the good Isanites stay in Isan, the bad ones go to sin city, and to a lesser extent to Huahin and Phuket.

You can make a living in isan too. But, if you want money for nothing (or for very little like spreading your legs) you gotta go to Pattaya.

My personal experience and perception is that foreigners, mainly Westerners and Chinese are by far the rudest and an occasional Thai from bkk in the mix here in the north, mainly due to over blown flared egos, a stark contrast from the locals from up here who are mostly by far polite modest and unassuming. Some folks take on a weird ego persona in desperation of recognition after they’ve settle in for a bit here, th definitely draws some weird folks. Though never once have ever seen a local here in the north loose their cool toward a farang.

Many people are influenceable sponges. You put them in a basket surrounded by rotten apples and they turn rotten.

Recommendation: Pack your bags an head for the sticks. You alone, without a "lady of the night" in toe visiting "her" village.

Be a "stranger" (a Farang). Eager to learn basic Thai. A pretty young school teacher speaking some basic English may be willing to help linguisticly. Opening doors that were closed to Farangs in tourist hub's.

It takes courage to go to the sticks of Thailand without the "guidance" of a bar lady. (Not recommended in the first place).

Few do it. They prefer to stay in tourist hub's, trying to analyse the "Thai soul" for years. With predictable, unsatisfactory results.

The OP might be on to something. Today, for the first time I can ever remember over many years, a Thai shop worker was very rude to me. I was polite as usual (I think), and the conversation was entirely in Thai. I had ordered an americano coffee at a major Thai coffee chain (Bangkok just off Rama 6) - not a Starbucks. As always, when it came, I asked if I could have a small amount of milk to add to the black americano (black is the only way you can order it at this chain). I was told 'no!' I asked why? And she said 'you will have to order another coffee with milk, like a latte.' I said I don't want a latte, I just want a very small amount of milk for my americano. 'You have to order another coffee she demanded - 95 baht'. From the outset, she was not smiling, not krieng jai (polite). I pushed a bit further. I only want a small amount of milk, why is that a problem? She was starting to snarl a bit. The other baristas started to look a bit uncomfortable. I eventually gave up and left with my small black coffee. But first I thanked her very much. She was very aggressive for a Thai in a service role. Never came across that before.
