Maybe she was a bit rude, but this is not a pattern of systemic hostility.

And we can have all sorts of rude interactions with a variety of people back home too. People rub each other the wrong way all the time.

True that I've had to pay with milk added, which is usually Oatmilk as I don't drink cow's milk. The sugar comes with it, as it's there for the taking on the counter like the straws, although I bring Equal or Splenda with me when I'm going to town. Back home, a tad of milk added at Starbucks won't cost more.

As far as the OP, I'm not a tourist area person besides when we went to Hua Hin and Phuket, so all I can do is comment on Isaan, and I haven't seen any changes in 9 years here. Some will never accept you and most will, at least in observation.

Whether their smiles are genuine is anyone's guess, but if you're always respectful with them and look them in the eyes, they'll respond in kind, even if they hate you in mind.

The OP was suggesting there was a noticable increase in rude behaviour from Thais (to foreigners). In 25 years, this was my first such interaction just today. So you're the one that needs to get overyourself.

She might. Maybe 1 in a 1000 baristas might genuinely like you and her face lights up when you go in and have a coffee and she anxiously anticipates you going back the following day.

Realistically, like is a strong word. Expecting a barista to like you is far-fetched.

It's just about being civilized.

If your dog and your gf like you, you're doing ok.

People are people and it's their job to act cordial, although some you can see if it's real or not, especially if you're seeing them time after time. Everyone has bad days, and it makes it hard to always be smiles, so you give them the benefit of the doubt, just like those on the roads, who might drive haphazardly because of a bad day, and time will show their real selves.

I go to many of the same places when I'm back home, and some baristas have been there years, and still know what I want to order, asking me "the same as usual"? Some are genuinely nice people and some go through the motions to get paid.

Dogs will always like you, but with women it's not so easy. That's where the dedication comes in.
