The Tesco Lotus store is very big & western style food (if you want it) is available no problem. Inside the Tesco complex is also a big shopping mall with all types of shops & outer stalls. There's (I think) three floors to the complex & maybe has gym facilities, but am not sure about that. Also inside the complex is a Thai style music/restaurant venue open until about 10pm. I use this Lotus complex regular & am very happy with what's available there.

trader, theres a couple of pools in town at the biger hotels, can't remember the name of the one we've been to, never bother with the name just know where it is, I'll find out though and post it for you. Like Chavy said there's a big Tesco with not to bad a selection of western food, never any mince though!

Few quiet bars in town to.

The Krung Sri River hotel also has a gym/pool available to non-residents, and the newish hotel on U-Thong Road (north east corner of the island) has a gym and sauna.

The shopping is rapidly improving. Robinson opened a branch a few months ago in the Ayutthaya Park shopping centre (which is where Tesco-Lotus is). Amporn will be opening Ampomall soon, and Big C is coming, too. Incidentally, Ayutthaya Park only has 2 storeys, and no gym that I know of.

The restaurant situation for western food isn't great - but most of the junk food chains are represented (MacDonalds, The Pizza Company, Swensens, KFC). On Soi Farang, near the Ayothaya Hotel there are a number of cafes catering to backpacker tastes.

Tony's Place, a.k.a. MM Guesthouse, is a popular haunt for expats. It serves passable western food.

New place coming soon, The Islander, (erh - its on the island!) construction nearly finished and should be open late September/early October. Thai/Brit/Aussie project. I know some of them personally and wish them all the best.

My bad. It's Steve's Place, not Tony's Place. Grumpy ex-pats versus wide-eyed backpackers. Take your pick.

Gyms? Just get running out on those streets! Fly the flag for farangland!

Want to work on your arms? Just bang out a few press-ups during the run! You might even make some new friends while out and about!:D

If you need the gym in Thailand you aren't doing enough during the working day :o

I went a week ago and they are now open. Its only a small bar next door-ish to Zenith Language School on the island of Ayutthaya- I thinks its SOI 1. Its also on the same road as Lotus Guest house.

They have a good Thai lady chef who does some nice Thai dishes, they are looking for an English/western food cook and are searching for someone!. Though they do some western food now they are having a few problems with suppliers, but its early days.

They also have a good LCD tv for all the usual sport and free wi-fi hot spot if you bring own lap top, apparently purchasing some computers is the next phase. This is on the upstairs floor, so the computer types are kept away from the bar area.

It had only been open a few nights when I visited but seemed popular with teacher/ajarn types and young well off Thai's - They were drinking Johnny Walker Black, so I am assuming they were rich!!

The Brits are Simon, the computer wiz, Paul- a funny Brummie (Birmingham -UK & have funny accents!! for those who are not from UK) and Aussie Paul.

They have now big sign out saying "The Islander"

When I was there we took a motorbike taxi from hotel, the guy did not know at first as was newly opened but I am sure this will improve.post-44176-1192410441_thumb.jpgpost-44176-1192410396_thumb.jpg
