Thailand seeks to block YouTube videos again

Fri Sep 21, 2007 12:09pm IST

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand is seeking to block clips on video-sharing Web site YouTube, accusing the chief royal adviser of being the mastermind of the bloodless coup last year, a top Justice Ministry official said on Friday.

The government, which lifted a five-month ban on YouTube in August after it agreed to block clips deemed offensive to revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was seeking a court order to block two video clips posted recently on www.youtube.com.

"In the next couple of days, we will seek a court order to block those links deemed to cause public confusion and threaten national security," Yanaphon Youngyuen, head of the Justice Ministry's Internet crimes unit, told Reuters.

"While awaiting the court order, we are seeking cooperation from Internet service providers to block those links," he said.

Democracy isn't just about presenting people with a choice of which useless politician to vote for, it's also about freedom of speech and expression, and most importantly, about open debate.

It's a long way towards true Democracy. Free speech isn't even enough - consider that one person might own all the important media. Then there needs to be the rule of law. And many more things that just aren't there in LOS. In fact, living here has opened my eyes to that more than anything, I used to think it's good enough to hold elections.

It's a long process, and the coup, as it turns out, was a big step backwards.

The good news from today's BKK post is that the IT minister - the one of the infamous quote: "The internet is not exciting" - is quitting. Things can only get better.
