October 3, 200718 yr I don’t know if I should post this here or start a new thread, but take care with the insulin. Apparently there are some weak batches. My friend was at 34 units per injection and with one package of five pen fils he was taking 56 units per injection and he probably could have gotten away with 60 units and still been around 95 - 100 for his test readings. The concern is remember to dose down when starting a new package. When he started a new package he was fine back at 34 units per injection. That certainly would have the potential of putting a person in a overdose situation by nearly doubling the required dose. I am sure it would have put him in a bad situation possibly fatal if he was not paying attention. He got his supply of insulin from BNH. I would have said something before but he just mentioned it today. Mods if you feel this should be in it’s own thread please make the necessary edits.
October 3, 200718 yr John, this is a very odd story to say the least. Is there any chance your friend left the "weak" batch out of the fridge too long? Or was there anything going on with his eating/drinking habits or stress levels while he was using it? If not, he should notify the hospital pharmacy and his doctor and return the empty vial for testing. Soemthing is wrong. I haven't heard of this happening before and woudl certainly nto expect iot from BNJH supplied insulin. I am assuming of course that the type of insulin in all cases was identical. Anyone else had such an experience?
October 3, 200718 yr Sheryl, I don’t know the exact situation however he does buy enough for 6 to 8 weeks at a time. The batch in question was the last of the insulin he purchased around the end of August. All were the same Mixtard 30 and experienced the same conditions in and out of the fridge. To better reply to your question I asked him and he said he started to notice fatigue a few days after he started this particular box. He did not connect it to the insulin as it came on gradual over several days. It was not until he noticed secondary symptoms of numbness that he concluded it was the insulin. When it was time for his next injection he was well over 200 pushing 250 for a test result and not around 85 to 90 as he expected. Like most diabetics they don’t test every day once they get the correct dosage in order. The only other thing was he had a bit of the flu and it may have weakened his body’s ability to produce more insulin, but that should be a non issue as he was eating less during the time he was sick reducing the need and it overlapped with another batch. Note each batch has 1500 units divided into 5 fills. Other than that there is no other information I can add.
October 9, 200718 yr I came across this today at; http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001263.html # NovoNordisk is discontinuing Mixtard 10, 20, 40 and 50 penfill 3ml cartridges for commercial reasons. These forms of Mixtard will be unavailable from 31 December 2007. If you currently use one of these Mixtard preparations, you will need to transfer to an alternative insulin before this time. You should make a non-urgent appointment with your doctor or diabetes specialist so that your insulin treatment can be reviewed and this can be arranged. # Your insulin should only be changed on your doctor's advice. If you are transferred to a different insulin, eg different type (short, intermediate or long acting), different species (human or animal), different brand, or different strength of insulin, your doctor may need to alter your dose, and your warning symptoms of low blood sugar may be slightly different.

Read that article. It doesn't say the Mixtard 30 will be discontinued. As your post above just the rest. NovoNordisk is discontinuing Mixtard 10, 20, 40 and 50 penfill 3ml Cheers

October 10, 200718 yr Author Probably would be a wise move to inquire non the less next time you go in for your stock. Mixtard 30 is the popular one. In the article its says the others are being dropped for commercial reasons, which would be logical. Cheers
October 10, 200718 yr Author Just called BNH. Price for one refill is B275. Cost for a box of 5 is B1,375 They were unaware of any plans to discontinue. Cheers
