Advice Needed

Featured Replies

I have recently been issued a non-immigrant 'ED' visa (multiple entry) from the Thai embassy in London. I have already bought a one way ticket, from London Heathrow to Bangkok. My plan being to buy a return ticket once my visa has expired and it was time for me to come back to the UK. Id much rather spend my money in Thailand on a flight back to the UK and it also just seems the sensible thing to do.

But now im a little bit worried about arriving in Bangkok with just a one way ticket. Will there be a problem with Thai Immigration at the airport knowing that i only have a one way ticket? Or will it be sufficent that i have a non-immigrant visa? Ill also have and be able to show bank statements to proove that i can fund my stay in Thailand.

Your advice will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

You should not require an onward ticket with a non immigrant visa and you will not need bank statements at Immigration but you could be asked to show proof of 20,000 baht in some kind of cash (but that is seldom asked for list A country travelers - those that get visa exempt entry).

Thanks Lopburi. Ive just been in touch with the Thai Embassy and they pretty much say the same thing. They said their isnt a problem with Thai Immigration and her i quote the Thai Embassies reply here ....'Please note that some flight operators may be reluctant to accept a traveller for Thailand with a one-way ticket even if they are in

possession of a valid visa. This may be something to do with rules or regulations imposed by the flight operator. It is most certainly

not due to any rule or regulation imposed by the Thai authorities..' Im flying with EVA Air, hopefully this wont be a problem. I guess i just worry too much sometimes.

Thanks again

Hmm, funny really, as airlines are ususallly worried about someone being refused entry to a certain country. You have a valid visa, so you comply to all the entry requirements. If in doubt, why not call EVA and maybe get a written confirmation that they will let you board.

Every time I open the Thaivisa forum something I hadn't thought about pops-up! I have applied for a Retirement visa "O-A" from the Royal Thai Embassy in LA and have already booked a one-way ticket to the LOS through China Airlines. I figure if they knock back my application, I can always re-book or get a refund. I just wanted to make sure that I had a seat reserved for a time that I could fit into my schedule. I've been in the planning stages for this journey for the past six months and it's been amazing to me the number of starts and stops I've had along the way. Sometimes something as simple as requesting a signature on a particular document (bank statement) took two or three weeks. Thank goodness for all the helpful advice from expats on this and many other forums. I certainly did not have to re-invent the wheel in this adventure, just get it balanced every now and than. :o

A visa does not guarantee entry - although it provides very good odds (probably 99%) but the O-A retirement is a pre-approved entry/extension so should be 100%. Airlines can question one way ticket travel but normally you just point out your visa and appeal to the next higher level agent and it is approved - a credit card would be useful for those still not convinced. At worst you would have to buy a ticket and then turn it in for refund.
