Has anyone got any info on where & when in Pattaya thais who are not resident in Chonburi can vote and what documents they will need. It was agreat idea for the Junta to decide to have an election in the busyest week for tourist arrivals and 2 days before christmas ,a very busy time in Pattaya and Bangkok

Thais vote in the local area where they are registered on their home paper - Tabian Bahn.

For many, this will be their home village or town. All they require is their ID card, as , amazingly, all their details are held on computer.

So it will probably mean a mass exodus, and there's nothing anyone can do about it, but no alcohol consumption is allowed on election day, and most establishments close down.

In other words - yet another national holiday

Pattaya Prepares for Next Election

In the Meeting Room of Pattaya City Hall on 30th October, Mr. Sittipap Muangkum, the Assistant Deputy Chairman of

Pattaya City Council discussed with fellow councilors about preparations for theGeneral Election which will be held on 23rd December all over Thailand. There will be 85 polling stations around town; they will be placed in temples, schools and government buildings. Residents not native to Pattaya will be allowed to vote in Pattaya due to changes in the election rules.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Friday has asked non-resident voters, who would not enable to return to cast ballot in their constituencies on December 23, to make registration with it as they would be eligible to vote in advance.

Supporting the Election Commission in term of management, Yodsak Khongmak, director of the Administration and Registration Division, said the voting in advance would be held from December 15-16 at all 50 district offices.

However, the non-resident voters needed to register with BMA from October 22 to November 22 to be qualified for the in-advance vote, he said

I would assume that Pattaya (or Chon Buri) would have a similar scheme, although the dates for registering may vary depending on the Province. They certainly had a similar scheme for the referendum, where about 100,000 people voted outside of their province...

Thanks for that. Interesting stuff, which I certainly wasn't aware of.

So ppresumably similar arrangements will apply for the upcoming election.

Even so, it is difficult to see all these workers in the entertainment and service industries bothering to go and register as an 'out of province' voter, even if they are aware that they can do so, which I doubt.

It has been traditionally time for a mass exodus when elections come round, and the government encourages people to go home and vote by declaring national holidays.

So it'll probably be pretty much the same this time - assuming the election goes ahead.
