Fire hits poor Bangkok community, 20 houses burn down

updated 8:46 a.m. ET Nov. 7, 2007

BANGKOK, Thailand - Fire swept through part of a low income community Wednesday evening in the Thai capital Bangkok, burning down at least 20 houses, police said.

No casualties were immediately reported in the blaze in Bangkok's downtown Sathorn neighborhood, said police Lt. Col. Kittiphan Chunthakarn, chief of Thung Mahamek precinct.

He said the fire, which occurred in an area where about 500 old wooden houses are packed together on narrow streets, was put under control after an hour, despite difficulties faced by emergency vehicles in getting through rush-hour traffic.

The cause of the fire was not yet known, he said.

The area was packed with residents carrying off their possessions as best they could manage. One man was seen carrying a television set on a motorbike, while another clutched statues of the Buddha, sacred religious objects to most Thais.

Fires are not uncommon in Bangkok's poorer districts, where wooden homes are crammed closely together and fire safety regulations are loosely enforced, if observed at all. The threat is greater in winter months, such as November, when the drier conditions can make such houses more susceptible.

Yeh, been a thread in the Bangkok forum about it.

Are you not supposed to credit the publisher of the article, i thought there would be some copyright issues?

Can't evict some people so they either 'pull a Chuwit' and bulldoze the place at 3AM or set a fire.

Look for a new Condo or Shopping center to appear in place of those dwellings is my prediction.

Maybe, but he has also stated the truth, the article is under copyright protection, copyright number 10894-D

overstated.

his first post on the issue was more than adequate

As for this whole copyright thing, the story I posted did NOT come from that site (Star Publications, Malaysia) to begin with, so their copyright has nothing to do with the story I posted.

Did anyone notice if the story was posted in the Thai papers ?
