Potatoes in Oz-speak?

The etymology is Scottish I believe and please, for bandwidth's sake, do not start the debate on the best way to roast your potatoes - it could go on for some time!

JXP is correct the phrase originates in Scotland and is most commonly used in the phrase 'tatties and neeps' which is a traditional dish consisting of potatoes and turnips (or swede).

Hi All

I am popping up to Chiangmai in a few weeks for Christmas with a few friends. Does anyone know of any good places which will be serving a good Christmas meal with all the trimmings.

My wife and I are putting on our second Annual Cristmas Dinner on December 24th. Turkey and all the stuff that goes with it...Christmas tree, decorations, music, gifts for Children, a few door prices for adults...

We only have 11 tickets left, so book right away, if you want to be part or our celebration. This is open to Expats only, no tourists. (Unless you have a friend or family visiting, then of course, feel free to bring them along)

Adults 475 BAht, Children 200 Baht (Children under 2 years old free)

Our rooms are fully booked for that night already, but if you plan to stay the night, I'm pretty sure we can still find you a guesthouse somewhere that still has a room.

Ticket sales will be cut off by December 17th, but I'm sure the 11 remaining tickets will be long gone by then

Would it be possible to have the restaurants putting on a traditional dinner to post their menus somewhere here? With prices? That would save a ton of legwork!

The current issue of Compass Magazine has an article describing what 7 or 8 restaurants are offering for the holidays, including prices. If you read the ads, you'll figure out what a few more are doing. You'll have to do the rest of the work yourself, including getting your own copy of the magazine.

How is the Mae Ping for Christmas dinner.. they are charging 845 baht for it .. and 475 for the kids but will have singers and santa and traditional fare.. Has anyone done Mae Ping for christmas?

OK i know a little bit last minute but we have just had the Thai family turn up to help us celebrate our first year of marriage (tomorrow) and now need to find somewhere that serves both good Thai and farang food. (dont really want buffet) Dont mind paying up to 1k baht pp but not much more.

The Dukes is sold out early in the day, but has seats later in the day.

Turkey, roast beef, fresh oysters, crab, ham, etc., and a lot more.

Just to let you know, we are sold out for tonight's Christmas Party.

i think i have narrowed my choice down to 2 or 3 places i might try.a nice atmosphereand a nice busy crowd would be nice.

tuskers or dukes i will plump for i think.ate at the red lion last year,pleasant enough,but lacking warmth and atmosphere.

is tuskers ticket only anyone(milton)?,as i dont arrive until december 22nd

Thanks Foxy I needed a kick up the backside to post what Tuskers is doing.

Rachele and I will be hosting a Christmas Day Feast & Party rather than a traditional sit down 3 course meal.

The food will include smoked salmon, prawns and two kinds of pate for starters. Turkey, ham, beef, tatties and veg for main course and a range of desserts. Plus salads, bread etc. If any veggies want to come we will happily discuss a range of food options for them. Its an eat as much as you want deal

We will be kicking off a 4pm with free Christmas punch on arrival which normally get things off to a flying start

We will also be doing an optional Secret Santa with a maximum present price of 200 baht so there will be some gift giving and a bit of a laugh. I have also made a Giant Jenga set, which is a great pub game guaranteed to get a party going.

Tickets are 500 baht but we will be spending it all on the party to give everyone a good time and hope that all who come will join in to make it a special Christmas Day. Children under 12 are free by arrangement.
