I drive a motorcycle here in bangkok and the main problems I see are:

Too many taxis !! They all look for customers so they drive very slow. They also do not pay attention to anyone else on the road.

Impatience!!(Understandable though)- If you ever look carefully people are constantly changing lanes to move faster this creates traffic

I agree with the Bus lanes- It will take out 1/3 of the road but at least the buses will not be stopping in the middle lane or far right lane to drop off there cutomers. NOt only is this dangerous but they block all three lane in doing so I see this constantly.

Traffic lights!!- They are not controlled simotenously. Lights should all turn green when going in one direction. They need to be timed better.

POLICE DONT TAKE THERE JOB SERIOUSLY!!. Rules are applied one day but the next day they are not. This is very confusing in unfair to the public. This can only be resolved by getting rid of corruption which cannot be done. You always see taxi s parked on the side of the road. This is because they have payed off the cops to stay there.

FInally I think that bangkoks road ways were not planned to support so many people. Now that everything is built so densly there is no way to make old roads larger.

In conclusion there will always be traffic here. yaeyy BUY A MOTORCYLE OR TAKE THE BTS!!

At the head of most traffic jams in BKK is normally either a policeman or a bus (or both)..........

The fact that most of the u-turn points are blocked forcing everyone to drive sometime several kilometers further to u-turn can't be helping either.

It is always amazing to me (frustratingly so) that on some days the 27KM drive to the office can take 30 miuntes and the very next day can take 2.5 hours with no visible sign of a cause.......... Amazing Thailand :)

On the other hand, rush hour Tuesday morning...7:30 a.m....the international airport to Thanon Phetburi, Soi 15...30 minutes. I thought that was pretty good.

There is no doubt the two reasons traffic is so bad in Bangkok is too many cars and roads built years ago and not designed for the load. This is compounded by the buses and min-buses that clog the streets at every stop.

I do think the traffic police do a pretty good job of trying to get it moving the best they can with what they have to work with.

Sitting waiting for red light to change can be a real drag and from that perspective seems very inefficient. But in the bigger scheme of things, it is probably the best way to get the most cars through an intersection. If you think about how long it takes the traffic to start flowing after a light change, if you reduce the number of changes, you can get more cars through. What they have decided, and I can’t really argue with it, is it is better to leave the cars sitting through a single long cycle rather then have them go through several shorter cycles of starting and stopping in getting through the intersection.

The traffic in central Bkk was a lot worse 10-15 years ago. But if you live or work anywhere near Lat Phrao and Ramkhamhaeng roads, that's not much consolation :)

Exactly. I drive 50,000 km a year, live in bangkok and have relatively few problems now compared to the horrors of the early 90's.

Even Ramkhaenhang is better now that it has the various expressway entrances.
