Thieves steal monks' new robes

WASSAYOS NGAMKHAM and SUNTHORN PONGPAO

Monks at a Nakhon Sawan temple have no new robes to wear after thieves made off with donations stored at Wat Bang Plamaw in Bang Phlat district of Bangkok. Phra Chaicharn Piyathammo, 52, alerted police to the theft of 30 sets of new, recently donated robes for monks, along with buckets of donated goods. They disappeared from one of the living quarters.

Phra Chaicharn said a novice monk had seen a taxi dropping off suspicious looking people outside the living quarters as he returned from his morning round collecting alms.

Shortly afterwards, the items were found to be missing.

He said the robes were to be given to newly ordained monks at Wat Tha Phra Charoenprot in Muang district of Nakhon Sawan. The ordination will be held when the abbot of Wat Bang Bamru turns 72 in May.
