My last Songkran holiday in Chiang Mai was before I moved to Thailand and I didn't ride I am looking forward to a few fun wet days! I'd suggest parking the bike from Friday morning through to Wednesday morning. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are the official dates, Saturday is bound to be fairly damp and there will be some early birds getting into it on Friday with scattered pockets of holidaying schoolchildren having a go for probably a good week prior to that! A few years ago I was soaked to the skin whilst riding a Honda Dream on one of the ring roads on . . . . . . 2 April!! JxP

Usually at night its fairly dry to ride around. If you see an obvious mob soaking people then find an alternative route or pick the better side of the road. Avoid the hot middle of the day for riding. last year on the motorbike I went to various markets early in the mornings and various destinations at night and only received a few small caliber squirt gun blasts.
March 24, 200817 yr My estimate is that the water-throwing will start getting serious the afternoon of the 11th and be over the evening of the 15th. On the 16th, Chiang Mai will be back to normal.

Looks like I'm gonna have to come by one of your shops and stock up on some books. Nuff to last 5 - 6 days.
March 25, 200817 yr Most book shops are closed during the water-throwing madness, and it is almost impossible to get a dry book home if someone dares to open.
March 25, 200817 yr You all must admit though, it's nice to cool off on a hot day but loads better when you're out of the city.
