Hi everyone!

Just wondering whether there is a photo ID card available in Thailand that can be purchased by foreigners. If so where can you apply. Having recently lost my photo drivers license overseas I am left without a photo ID card and am not keen to carry my passport around. I will not apply for my Thai drivers license as I currently have my International license and I am in the process of getting a replacement photo license from my home country. In the meantime though I would like to have something to carry on me should I need it for whatever reason.

Is there any other Thai card that I can use that would have my personal details???

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Emubob

Well Emubob It looks like you will have to wait for your new replacement driving licence.

But I am not sure that this is acceptable as proof of identification in Thailand.

I think the only form of identification in Thailand with a photo in it, is a work permit.

Looks like you will have to carry your passport around with you.

Ted.

You can use your thai drivers license as ID card, you can use it for check ins and passport controls for domestic flights, go over the border to neighboring countries and come back in without problems and prices you pay are cheaper. You can do the drivers license in one day for motorbike only 65 Baht and for car 160 Baht. Or apply for thai drivers license with you international one costs about 250 Baht i think.

Emubob, if I were you, I'd reconsider getting a Thai DL. It carries a photo and is not hard to get. I got mine in about 1.5 hours and it cost just 105 B. Didn't even need to go back next day to pick it up--they did it on the spot.

If you're really set against doing it, you can always carry a photocopy of your passport name/photo page with you rather than risking loss of the real thing. It works just fine if all you want to do is have some indication of your identity on your person in case of accident or something.

Since you can't get a Thai DL instantly without the replacement one that you're waiting for, I think the privious post to photocopy your passport is a great idea.

To be honest, I don't see any danger in carrying the original passport with you.

... unless You are planning to leave Your house during Sonkran and Your original passport is not made of plastic that is.

Happened to me last year, when some hilarious farang tw@t from the offshore bar soaked a bag containing my passport et al. I told him to get me and leave the bag alone and judging by his obnoxious enjoyment he clearly took more pleasure in leaving me dry and soaking the bag.

Songkran's just for chavs, idiots & kids, innit?

No problems with a photocopy of your passport - just make sure you also carry a copy of the page(s) with your visa and entry stamp(s).
