apparently many people smuggle drugs (hash, coke, ecstacy) into thailand for the full moon party

According to whom?

Apparently you don't mean foreigners, since apparently it is very easy to get drugs in overland by local people. Or from up country, apparently.

Apparently, you can purchase narcotics in and around the areas that are home to the full-moon parties without any problems.

Of course, apparently this begs the old question: why was he here for five days with a stomach full of hash-filled condoms? Apparently, one downs the latex and then hops on a flight. Apparently, he wasn't as smart as you average bear.

Maybe he was constipated and couldn't get the stuff out of his stomach :o

All jokes and kiddings aside, he actually did die...

Man with hash dies in Thailand

An Australian who tried to smuggle 60 condoms stuffed with hashish inside his stomach has died in a Thai hospital.

John Paul Jones, 50, was rushed to hospital on April 11 in the southern Thai town of Surat Thani, with doctors finding 60 condoms stuffed with hashish in his intestine. Three of the condoms had burst. A total of 800 grams of hashish was recovered from Jones.

Jones, from Queensland, remained in hospital after the condoms were discovered. He was charged by Thai police with possession of narcotics, which carries a maximum jail term of five years.

But the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed the Queenslander died on Saturday.

"A 50-year-old man who was hospitalised in Surat Thani in Thailand on the 11th of April ... he died on the 19th of April," a DFAT spokesman said, without naming Jones for privacy reasons.

"His family has been advised of his death and, in co-ordination with the Australian embassy in Bangkok, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra is continuing to provide consular assistance to his family."

The spokesman would not say how Jones had died, but the ABC has reported he died of septicaemia and liver failure.

No decision had been made on the return of Jones' body to Australia, with the DFAT spokesman saying it was "a matter for his family to decide." "We will provide assistance depending on what they decide," he said.

Provincial authorities speculated that Jones had swallowed the goods to get them past port inspectors at the pier to Phangan Island, notorious for its "full moon" parties, drug-fuelled all-night revels that attract hundreds of foreign tourists each month. Phangan Island, about 400km south of Bangkok, is part of Surat Thani province.

He remained in hosptial, although police in the meantime filed charges of possession of narcotics.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Canberra confirmed the death of Jones, from Queensland state.

So when you swallow 60 condoms full of hashish, and it kills you, would you consider that death by overdose?

No, death by septicemia... a body-wide infection... either from the condoms contaminating his intestines when they burst or quite possibly from a hospital-acquired infection occurring from his intestinal operation performed at a provincial hospital.

It mentioned liver failure was the cause as well. I wonder if that if affected by vast amounts of hashish?

Quite likely a result of the septicemia...

Symptoms of septicemia are fever, chills, low blood pressure, confusion, and rash; it often results in multiple organ failure if not treated promptly with antibiotics.

as for the septicemia... there was a study on Germany-standard hospitals...generally a bit more diligent than a Thai provincial hospital would be. (nosocomial = hospital-acquired):

One thousand post-mortem reports were analysed retrospectively to see whether the patient had had a nosocomial infection and whether this led directly to or contributed to the patient's death. In 7.4% of all autopsies nosocomial infection was the direct cause of death. In 6.3% of the patients, nosocomial infection was a contributory factor leading to death. The most common hospital infections were pneumonia, septicaemia, peritonitis, meningitis, and hepatitis B.

An earlier poster said something about getting smarter as you get older...well, as someone who is getting older, you really don't get any smarter, but you usually get a lot less foolish. This doesn't seem to be the case in this situation.

My condolences to the friends and family members.
