Thailand Nightlife

I fully support the Thai government in any crackdown they should place on the nightlife scene in Thailand.

Any discouragement from coming to Thailand to the sort of rabid, disgusting drunken monsters we all know and hate would be most welcome. Bring it on!

I think the main idea to "crackdown on nightlife" is to close bars early.

Ever occur to you that people might continue to act rabid behind closed doors? Bars being closed early doesn't mean bad behavior will stop...they'll just use the little time they have while the bars are open to get a girl or get drunk (or whatever) and then go home and continue (what next? ban people from having house parties?) The ones who suffer from this are people who just want to chill out with friends, meet new people or just dance the night away.

Prostitution is supposed to be illegal here...why not crack down on THAT law first?

But does a sex tourist care what time the bars are open ??? Surely he has found a girl (or animal vegetable or whatever) by closing time and does not want to be drunk so that he and his viagra can get his moneys worth...

Its the 'normal' tourist that feels this the most..

Plus it seems no coincedence that the larger, generally cleaner, fire escape equipped, safer, possibly security controlled, etc places that farangs have invested into and manage all seem to be being closed but the out of the way, no safety measures, no fire regs, etc Thai frequented and owned places seem immune... Or am I just cynical ??

I have to agree...closing bars to save Thailand's "reputation" is not going to work.Just look in the Bangkok Post classifieds...you can rent someone and have them come to your room...who needs to waste money chatting a man/woman up at bar?

> Isn't closing early another measure to save electricity?

Don't get me started on the electricity saving.. Tesco Lotus (in Chiang Mai) now closes at 10pm, and what did they do? Put high-powered lichting masts all over their parking lot. I bet they use MORE power now to power those than they did before when they were open to midnight (or 2am even)

This has been discussed before. The new closing hours may not be the most effective measure to curb 'immoral activities', and it isn't even clear if the authorities really want to do something or whether this is a move motivated by selfinterest (who owns property in the entertainment zones?) and an attempt to improve the image of Thailand.

However, this new 'crackdown' sends a clear message to the world:

We don't want sextourists to target Thailand anymore!

Actually, it's more like: "We don't want any kind of tourists who still have somewhat of a life to target Thailand anymore." :o

Note that closing times are as big an issue on the Lonely Planet forum as it is on this forum.

For "we don't want sextourists anymore", the corresponding policy would be: "Close down all bars that allow their staff to go with customers".

Um hello?! Does anyone realise the farang contribute to a small percentage of sex tourists? What about the girls standing along Silom being picked up by Thai men?

That's a social problem. Farangs with hookers, that's a sex tourist problem.

exotic_princess- bit naive view of things there are more important problems in Thailand to worry who is shagging who and if dosh involved.

The govt should be looking for ways to create good paying jobs, encouraging foreign investment and finding ways to better the average Thai person's life. This will create opportunities and maybe prostitution will decline. However bottom line is MONEY and politicians are more interested in lining their pockets than actual concern for the people.

Closing times won't work? The police aren't even enforcing the law now... they even reversed themselves in Phuket again. Business will go on as usual, just plain/simple reality.

K. Bhokin told the Gazette last week that the entertainment laws must be enforced. But, he added, “There is a possibility the rules might be re-considered, if we find an improvement in customers’ awareness of how to behave in such places, and safer driving.”

So all we have to do is keep Scampy out of the bars and Igotworms off the roads? PM them now. :o
