Smithson Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I've installed Zone Alarm security suite, but I did it incorrectly - without the anti-virus. Now I've been trying to uninstall, repair etc. but this has created all sorts of problems with my computer. Can I just go to the program files and delete all the zone alarm files that are there or will this create more havoc?
A_Traveller Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 (edited) LINK HTH Regards PS Just to add many security products are difficult to remove since they are designed to be 'decommissioning' resistant. Edited May 6, 2008 by A_Traveller
2008bangkok Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I wouldnt recommend just deleting the sub folder in program files....wouldnt do anything, you must have the uninstaller in add/remove programs or in the porgram files folder?
Smithson Posted May 6, 2008 Author Posted May 6, 2008 I wouldnt recommend just deleting the sub folder in program files....wouldnt do anything, you must have the uninstaller in add/remove programs or in the porgram files folder? I've been trying to uninstall from both the add/remove prgrams and the program files folder. Neither is working, it appears I've partially uninstalled and can't go any further. I keep getting error messages when trying to repair, uninstall, reinstall or install a different version.
2008bangkok Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 What error messages are you getting when trying to re-install???? have you tried to repair/uninstall in safe mode?
A_Traveller Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 If you have system restore running, I suggest you return to a check-point where ZA was still installed, this may reset the structure so you can then use the approved removal approach as noted in the link I posted above. Regards
Smithson Posted May 6, 2008 Author Posted May 6, 2008 The big issue is the other problems it's causing for my other programs. Illustrator and Photoshop won't start, with a message that the serial numbers are wrong and when Outlook starts it's keep trying to access the Office installation CD, with a message saying the SKU011.CUB file is missing. Is a reformat the only option?
2008bangkok Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 No need to reformat...try like A_traveller said do a system restore to the point before you installed zone alarm..this should fix your problem Start>>programs>>accessories>>system tools>>system restore keep us posted

Virus? Someone told me I may have one, I did a scan but nothing came up, which is why I decided to go for the zone alarm.
Richard-BKK Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I have seen this problem before. Open Start->Run-> type "MSconfig" and look for the startup of Zonealarm, un-select the ZoneAlarm marker. REstart the system and open add/remove program and uninstall ZoneAlarm.

The plot thickens..you think you might have a virus...take a look at what process are being use right click taskbar at the bottom start task manager then process's..look out for thinks that just dont look right>>why do you think a virus?? Download and install this Cure IT there has been good reviews on this forum and i have use it once, if any virus it will kill em..use it in safe mode for added orm... http://freedrweb.com/cureit/ Down load and install whats running http://www.whatsrunning.net/WhatsRunning/D...ng2_2_Setup.exe very good for seening what processes are being used and what is trying to connect to your pc..basicly kill everything you think is fishy and then try an uninstall zone alarms again.. Im very suprise that you cannot do a restore to the point before install of zone alarms...very strange..are you saying that every restore point is showing zone alarm still..dont forget you can go back a couple of months with system restore if ned be it doesnt affect any documents downloads etc just system files registry files..so if you want to go back 2 months you can do and if you have installed any software in those 2 months you need just reinstall the program and updates will be automatic.. Have a poke there is always a solution reformat always the last
Smithson Posted May 7, 2008 Author Posted May 7, 2008 I ran the cureit program and it found a virus, which has been deleted. Things are pretty much back to normal, except I still can't open Illustrator and Photoshop. I think they may have to be reinstalled.
Smithson Posted May 7, 2008 Author Posted May 7, 2008 I should add that I've also got the What's Running program going. Can't see anything unusual, but I wouldn't know what to look for. From my guess I've eliminated the problem, just have to reinstall the Adobe.
katana Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) I think the reason ZoneAlarm doesn't uninstall cleanly in some cases is that it's still running when people try to uninstall it. The trick is to open up Task Mananger and kill 'zlclient.exe' and 'vsmon.exe' before uninstalling. As to the other problems of Illustrator and Photoshop etc not running, I don't think they're related to ZoneAlarm. Edited May 7, 2008 by katana
