Nightmare at the Prachuap tax office
Sorry to hear that you had a frustrating experience. In fairness to the staff at the Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan Office - I filed my tax return there yesterday. As this is the first year that I have been required to file - I was interested to see how the experience went. The officer dealing with me was extremely helpful, and assisted me with setting up my e-filing account so that I can file future returns online instead of needing to visit an RD Thailand office. They entered all of my data for me, linked my Thai wife's Thai ID to my account (for verification of the taxation allowance granted with respect to her) - and completed the tax return there and then on the spot. They then printed a copy of everything that they had done for my records, free of charge. I couldn't have been happier with their service. I'm sure that it is as difficult for some Thai people dealing with foreigners as it is for us dealing with them, given the complexity of the Thai language, and the low level of English language skills sometimes encountered. While not advice of any kind - perhaps one approach that you could take is to adhere to the large warning signs posted throughout RD Thailand offices - reminding customers that RD Thailand staff are there solely to administratively assist, and that it is the (sole) responsibility of the individual filing their tax return to ensure the completeness/accuracy of their own tax return. If you are confident that a particular income stream is not assessable, then treat it as such but (as others have mentioned) - keep full records for future reference should there be any future audit. Tip: for those having difficulty with viewing their completed/filed tax return on the RD Thailand e-filing site, as we do not hold a Thai ID Number - simply enter '0' in the field where a Thai citizen would usually enter their Thai ID Number - and your completed documentation will be successfully retrieved and displayed. Is NancyL still with us? She was well versed in these matters in Thailand. If the Thai authorities are approached, especially by a NGO, and the situation is explained it's very unlikely that they will treat him like a regular overstayer. I have a memory of a case in Chiang Mai around 10 years ago where the Thai authorities waived visa requirements and the individual was placed in an assisted living facility. At whose expense, I don't know. I do remember NancyL responding to a report of a lone dementia sufferer in the Hang Dong area. When he was found, it was also found that he lived with his Thai family and his adult children, that he had fathered, were actively looking after him. The report was derived from a sighting when he wandered away from his family while shopping. Anyway, this looks like a handwashing exercise to me - get him on the aircraft and he's someone else's problem. We know there's serious doubts as to whether he'll be allowed to board in the first place. I'd be looking to the Embassy, or a local NGO to get involved. -

Freed Israeli Hostages Return Home After 498 Days in Captivity
After enduring 498 harrowing days in Hamas captivity, Israeli hostages Sagui Dekel-Chen, Sasha Troufanov, and Iair Horn have finally returned to Israel. Escorted out of Gaza by Israeli special forces following their handover by the Red Cross, the three men were brought to a secure facility near the border for initial medical evaluations and to reunite with their families. Despite their joy, they acknowledged the painful reality that he may not yet know his father was murdered on the same day. "This knowledge – or lack thereof – will completely transform his homecoming from a day of great joy to one of deep mourning for his beloved father," they said. Iair Horn’s family also expressed both relief and continued anguish. "Now we can breathe a little. Our Iair is home after surviving hell in Gaza. Now, we need to bring [hostage brother] Eitan back so our family can truly breathe," they said. Their focus remains on securing the release of all remaining hostages, with a commitment to "continue working to bring Eitan and all other hostages home." For Sagui Dekel-Chen, the moment of freedom carried additional emotion as he learned he had become a father for the third time while in captivity. "I’m great," he responded upon hearing the news that his daughter was born two months after his abduction. Their return comes amid tensions between Israel and Hamas over the implementation of hostage agreements. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office condemned Hamas’s actions, stating, "This week too, Hamas attempted to violate the agreement and create a false crisis with baseless claims. Thanks to the deployment of our forces inside and around Gaza, and thanks to President Trump’s clear and unequivocal statement, Hamas backed down, and the release of the hostages continued." The government reaffirmed its commitment to recovering every hostage, both the living and the fallen. "We are working in full coordination with the United States to rescue all our hostages as quickly as possible, and we are fully prepared for what comes next, in every respect," the statement continued. The three freed men will now begin the difficult process of rehabilitation, both physically and emotionally, with the full support of their families and the Israeli government. The moment of their return was met with cheers and tears from loved ones and the wider public, but the struggle is not over. I would expect if 98% of the population heard the word 'gaza' they'd think of Palestine not Mozambique. You guys are unbelievable in your unhinged defense of a goverment being audited.
