I've been in a room on Khao San Rd for a day or two, but would ideally like to live nearer the city centre and nightlife around Sukhumvit etc. I don't know that area at all really, but do know I can't stand KS Road, which is full of gap yearers on the rampage.

Does anyone know any cheap hotels within walking distance of the city's nightlife? Do they actually exist, or are they all located outside the city?

I'm looking for somewhere for 2 months - I'm used to basic budget hotels/guesthouses so am not bothered about staying in them for a long time - just need to know if there are any that are reasonably priced and safe. I take it renting a studio/apartment would be very expensive?

By budget I mean 15k a month ish.

Cheers

Couldn't you get an apartment of some kind for that? Would probably be a bit less squalid than a hotel that cheap.

I think that's what I'm asking...

Thanks, although I should have made it clear I don't do moto taxis in any way, shape or form. I don't mind hiking though, so it doesn't need to be central central.

Around Sukhumvit...you have two main choices.... hotel or room/apartment....

For a budget of 15K per month (500 baht per night), decent traditional/western-style hotels around Sukhumvit are hard to come by....

For western style apartments around Sukhumvit, that budget is on the low-end of do-able, but you'd really have to look... And then, there'd be utilities (electric and water) in addition...

However, Thai people all throughout Sukhumvit rent single rooms with bathroom, usually out of the patio/balcony, for anywhere in the 3000 to 5000 baht a month range. Don't expect anything fancy... Just a simple single room, often without a bed, since many sleep on pads on the floor. That's the standard, local accommodation.

There also are some Thai apartments (not rooms) out toward On Nut that probably can be had for around 10K per month... But the folks on-site aren't likely to be speaking much if any English... So having someone to help communicate would go a long way...

Then, there are some guesthouse options... This is one on Soi 11 that I've heard a lot of good things about thru the years, but never stayed there... You can find a fair amount about it on the Internet...and it's a short walk from the Nana BTS station... Prices are close to your range....

Description

Comprised of a rambling collection of wooden and concrete buildings hidden down a Sukhumvit Soi 11 subsoi, Suk 11 is one of Bangkok's top backpacker guesthouses. Friendly English-speaking staff and comfortable, reasonably quiet rooms make this an ideal spot to relax in one of Bangkok's most vibrant areas. The rooms are clean, though basic and all rooms include breakfast. The common area and open-air cafe on the sub-soi are ideal for mingling with other guests. Reservations are usually required -- particularly in high season. Recommended.

One of the better values in Bangkok. The ambience is a little strange and the room decorations are bare-bones, but everything is very functional and clean. The abundance of sex tourists in the Sukhumvit area is definitely off-putting, but there's also tons of great food and it's a perfect base for exploring Bangkok -- with the Skytrain and metro nearby, we didn't have to take a taxi or tuk-tuk the entire time we were there. We accidentally left some stuff in the lobby before we left the country and one of the staff members was kind enough to mail it to us (at our expense, or course, but it was refreshing to see that sort of dedication from the staff at a budget place).
