Emirates Enforcing Baggage/hand Luggage Allowances

Featured Replies

My wife and I flew back to Thailand Emirates yesterday after a month in the UK and, along with countless others, was told that both my baggage and hand luggage were overweight and would have to be reduced.

Apparently, as from last Monday (9-6-08) they have been enforcing a strict 20kg baggage/7kg hand luggage rule.

I have flown with them countless times and, as far as I was aware, was always allowed 25kg for baggage and was even given a small leeway on that. They've never objected to 27-28kg before.

But yesterday firstly our hand luggage was weighed for the first time ever and at 16kg was 2kg over then, at 55kg, our cases were 15kg over the new 20kg limit. I was told that it had to be reduced and even 1kg over was not acceptable. I booked the tickets on line and there was no mention of any baggage allowance in the email conformation I received and it's too late to to check the terms and conditions from when I booked (who reads them all every time anyway) so it was totally unexpected.

So, for anybody traveling with Emirates in the future, check your baggage allowance and don't go even 1kg over otherwise you'll be like me and many others, sitting in Manchester airport trying to decide what to take and what to leave behind.
