Water pipe explosion damages Rama V road

BANGKOK: -- A water pipe located on Rama V Road exploded on Thursday morning, causing police to close traffic from Saphan Daeng intersection to Soi Ranong I throughout the day.

The explosion of the 46-year-old pipe damaged the four-lane load, leaving a two-metre hole in the ground.

Officials from the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority rushed to repair the pipes and fix the road.

It was expected that the repairs would be complete by midnight on Thursday.

How does a water pipe explode? I can understand leaks and bursts but never heard of one "exploding".
