I got into work today to discuss at least two files had disappeared from a hard drive. They weren't on my computer, it was another connected on a network.

Right now I'm backing up all files. Does anyone have an idea as to the cause?

Somebody has moved or erased them, or the access rights have been changed.

I'm not a computer whizz but I'd guess you have aquired a virus.

A virus is of course a possibility, but human error or hacking seem more likely. Either way, scanning for viruses and malware surely wont hurt.

File types. e.g doc, xls? OS? Are you an admin on the network or 'just' a user?

They are word docs, it's a small network connecting 3 computers and the files can't be found on either. Human error is a possibility, so is a virus.

I'll do a scan.
