Hi

A colleague did his 90-day report at Pattaya / Jompthien Immigration, yesterday, and was asked to provide proof that the address that he gave was in fact where he actually is living. He had to go away and return with some documentation bearing his name and address.

He, and I, have never come across this requirement before when doing the 90-day report - usually painless and in and out in 5 minutes or less. I was not asked for any proof when I did my report last month so maybe this is a new requirement starting July. Anyone know anything about this? Maybe just Pattaya Immigration playing silly bu**ers, as usual!

question

does the 90 days counting start everytime you have a new arrivelcard.iow.as you come back in to thailand?

I ask because when i renewed my extension in the mids of my 90 days reporting it didnt started new on the day that i got my extensionstay but on my entry TM date a month earlier

just curious

You are probably correct.

There are three things that set the 90 day count.

The first application for extension of stay (TM.7). (only the first time).

Arrival in Thailand (TM.6) always starts the count at 1.

Reporting address (TM.47) always starts the count at 1.

Is it possible when the officer checked the computer record for the person last reported address it did not match the one on the current TM 47 and there was no recorded change of address?

Firstly; I did my 90-day repeort 1 July, no need for proof of address. Could this be a mix-up with Recidency Certificate?

Secondly; it is not at all unreasonable to ask for such proof, or to ask for the 90-day report. Even to go there in person is not asking too much, to give the authorities some level of control over who is in the country at any given point.

Thirdly; the quoted statement is just typical of what sort of nonsence the Pattaya Immigration Office has to deal with on a daily basis. A constant stream of riff-raff, some even without shirts on, smelly, drunk and load, with very sketchy paperwork. If you follow the rules and requirements, dress neatly and behave yourself, you get staller service at said office. I do every time, from all the officers I have dealt with. Easy.

Forthly; Immigration is actually an ENFORCEMENT AGENCY, not a SERVICE CENTER.

5) Thailand's visa rules are in fact very generous overall, however certain people will fall through the cracks occationally. But they will usually also find a way eventually.

6) The rules are there for a reason, same as the requirement to have a work permit also for unpaid/charity work.

So it is written, and so it shall be.

EDIT: For typos

That's rubbish, Thailand rules are a load of crap in my not so humble opinion.

When a Thai person moves to Belgium you go to your local administration to register that person, within one week MIB will visit your home to check that person is effectively living there (checking tooth brush and clothes...) which will result in the delivery of a residence card. I just saw on Belgian news administration will deliver a card with chip similar to the Belgian ID card. No further need to report some bullishness every 90 days at some far away place and you can work, own land, benefit from social security, all of whom you can NOT in Thailand except leaving your money behind.

Thanks for the insight. A couple years ago, Immigration asked for proof of me living at the address that I provided. I went to the police station located next to the Immigration office @ Suan Plu, and asked for the required letter. They called the juristic office of the condo, talked the the appropriate person, and they typed up a letter - no charge - within a few minutes. Not a big deal at all.

OK, managed to decipher your post. You are missing my point though, this is not about the 'generosity' of Thai Immigration but is more about the fact that not all Immigration offices sing to the same hymn sheet. Pattaya Immigration have been notorious in the past for wanting extra documentation that is not 'on the list'. For example, for a while they were insisting on a copy of a valid credit card and a map indicating your location, when applying for an extension. The map is still required, I believe, for marriage extensions but the credit card requirement seems to have disappeared.

The problem is not so much what is required by a particular office as finding out, before you front up for whatever purpose, WHAT it is they want you to provide this week, which may well not be the same as last week! The requirement for proof of address for a 90-day report seems to be a new one - although, again, may be completely arbitrary. I, personally, have never had a problem with Pattaya Immigration but maybe I've been lucky. I do know of a few people though that have been given the run-around - and no, they were not dressed inappropriately.

I fully agree with your sentiments concerning appropriate dress - some of the sights that you see are almost unbelievable. Maybe they need a couple of bouncers on the door - inappropriate dress and you don't get inside!

Try being a foreigner who is not on an immigrant visa and wanting to stay long term in the USA. Ain't so easy, unless you go underground.

Thailand's immigration rules are pretty reasonable I've found over the years. Must say, tho, the 90-day report could well be stretched out to one year, as in the U.S. Oh, well, not a big thing as I usually mail mine in, just need to remember to do so!

BTW, needing to prove your address argues for having a Thai driving permit, a yellow tambien baan, etc.

If you live in Thailand then you try to follow there rules, as most do in what ever Country they live in with that Countries rules..

As I have said in other posts if you go to the Town Hall and registrar there is no problem, and if you need anything as proof of address then you just go there and they will print off the letter + add the big red seal to the document. {I have a copy in my passport just in case]

I have lived in many places around the world, and found it is the same everywhere, if your registered with the Town Hall everything is very easy.

You must be joking yeah?

Have a look at what happens in Europe:

Hundreds of boats full of illegals coming from Africa and landing on Spain's coast or islands.

Thousand of illegals invading/asking refuge in Europe.

Have a look at Sangatte in France where they have a center for illegal immigrants, next to the channel tunnel, where tens of illegals escape each night jumping on cargo trains to England and the fight of the cops to catch them etc. etc.

As a resourceful farang trying to live in Thailand I do find their rules all but accomodating.

Take the 800K rules for retirees, because of some idiots who used to lent that money for one day we now need to have that money locked for 3 months in a non-performing Thai bank account, 800k which is way more than what most of us need to spend in one year

I will not waste my time to detail all other stupidities imposed to farangs wishing to live here whilst having sufficient resources :o

Has it ever occured to you that it is not stupidity, but done on purpose, to avoid having many people like you living here? We are not wanted here, we are merely tolerated if we spend money, and a lot more than your "way less than 800K per year" (my implication since 800K is way more than required for you. It is not for me). Your spending here is of no consequence to Thailand, but your presence here is seen as negative to Thailand.

How easy is it to go to live in Euroland for a Thai, except for marrage? Yes if they are accpted they will eventually get citizenship. Do you want that in Thailand, and possibly having to give up your existing one? Can a Thai go there to retire without HUGE funds? Of course not.

So it is written, and so it shall be.
