Pattaya Closes Half Of Its Beer Bars

A hypothetical question, do you think the closure of half the beer bars in central and south Pattaya would improve its image. I think it would make the resort more acceptable to Thai and foreign families, something like Patong.

Mant parts of Pattaya, such as North Pattaya, and Jom Tien, are very nice. The facilties and shopping is far superior to Patong. There is in the construction stage a new Central Departmental store on Beach Road.

Even though the beaches are better in Patong, I think with less beer stalls, there would be a vast improvement of the cities image.

Faranglandoz. :o

I don't think closing the beer bars will do much to improve the image of Pattaya, there has to be a political will to change things. To improve the image the powers that be should look at the traffic chaos caused by the inability of the populace to comprehend parking.

Fixing the beach might be fairly straightforward, but fixing the traffic, however desirable will take a lot more effort and money. I agree 100% that this would go a long way to improving Pattaya, but somehow I don't think it's going to happen, alas.

Buzzer88

Fixing the traffic could be the easiest thing to do in Pattaya if the powers that be had the balls to stand up to the baht bus co-operative and remove at least half of them from the roads!!!

This would also go a long way to providing a safer and cleaner environment. If they want to encourage an improved class of visitor they need to look at the infrastructure of the transport. May be increasing the parking fines to something significant and giving the BIB a better % will ensure more enforcement. Get the tour buses a place to park for a booked time and charge them to escort their precious cargo safely across the road. A little like a landing slot at the airport. It will make the roads safer and improve the experience of the punters when they go to admire the pristine beach that Pattaya offers.

Yep I have to agree that Pattaya is definately on it's way too being more up market, especially with the used condoms that litter the beach every morning without to mention the nightly bowel movements that have to be cleaned up before the tourists arrive.

http://www.pattayadailynews.com/shownews.p...NEWS=0000006786

Anybody who thinks Pattaya is going to be an up-market tourist resort in our liftime are sadly out of touch and living in cloud cuckoo land.

And BTW this place will never become peoples vision of Paradise doesn't matter how much cleaning up, traffic control or closing bars is done. It beggars beleive that people can even think that Pattaya could become the top resort destination.

Time for a lot of people to wake and smell the coffee.

More varied entertainment. More arts. More culture. Better and more varied restaurants. Closing half the beer bars or 90 percent would just leave a BIG HOLE with nothing to fill it.

I have said it before, the real answer is MORE ARTS. The city should build a huge arts center ala Singapore Durian Dome or Sydney Opera House. Then you will have a real international city here.

But I thought there was an a robust art scene already:

- There is modern and interpretative dance. Ok, you may turn your nose up at the Thai version involving poles and women doing gymnastics on stage but when they do it at cirque de soleil, people pay $500 for primo seats and call it art. When western governments throw money at clog dancers its called art, but when patrons pay for the inspirational dance Thai entertainer moves, it's not considered art.

- There are fine cabaret shows. Look at all the Elvis impersonators. It's as good as Reno, Nevada! Plenty of guys dressed up as girls lip synching to thrill the masses. Don't scoff. In the west, the Ballet Trocadero is the darling of critics everywhere.

- You want art? Who can resist the lovely landscapes and animal drawings on velvet! There isn't a trailer in the USA or council flat in the UK without one. Heck, I'm sure most aussies that live on the gold coast have 2, that's how cultured they are.

- You sure about building a massive "opera" house like they have in Sydney? What happens when there aren't enough peepots as was the case at ole swampy? Seriously now, would you be at ease listening to the Berry Girls while looking up at a few tons of prefab concrete slab and not knowing if the patronage contract called for rebar and heavyduty pins?

BTW, the Sydney Opera house cost 15X more than estimated and was an architectural nightmare to build. Are you sure you want the Thais to do the same? As the Australian version was subsidized and benefited from a lottery, how do you propose the Thais raise the funds when the typical person is barely getting by and Pataaya can't even treat its sewage or provide clean drinking water? There are priorities and then there are priorities.

Been going to Pattaya since I was 16. :D Hard to book a plane ticket anywhere else. I like to party, drink, play golf, shag young women just like any average male on the planet. Just like the vietnam war boys who are responsible for turning this fishing village into a major tourist destination.

Closing half the beer bars? Get real people (khun puet go hok). :D You really think the Thai's hate our money that much that they are going to risk the reputation of there cash cow pasture? Get off the drugs.

And yeah the traffic is bad - if you drive like a farung. And if you really want a swim Ko Lan is only 40 baht return - good day trip. Take a girl along she will love you for it and make sure you are always replenished :D .

If its a family atmosphere you want, go somewhere else. Thailand has much variety to offer and that is why we love it. And for the person who said that Aussies drink to much - too bloody right we do, go and eat some cement powder and harden the f up. :o

I posted above that fixing the traffic and the beach (ie pollution) might improve Pattaya, but I do still like it the way it is. I live on the darkside and enjoy the relative peace and quiet that gives me. If I want something more energetic then it's only a short drive downtown.

Yes less traffic would be great, yes less pollution on the beach would be great, but shutting down half of the beer bars is pointless. Best let market forces decide how many beer beers there should be. Pattaya is what it is, fun town, and long may it reign.

You obviously think Patong is a dead place. They don't have anything like the beer stalls that Pattaya has, but I think it still has enough entertainment. What you dont see in Patong is numerous Thai ladies along the Beach Road, trying to socialise with foreign community. :o

of course im joking. trying to change an image by eliminating only half seems silly.

I think some bars are ok, Patong has some and dos'nt seem to get the same bad label as Pattaya :o

If shutting beer bars is not the answer, how do you think Pattaya's image could be improved

Faranglandoz

by having the people who visit and live in a party resort go somewhere else, that would improve lots. This is a party town and that is why the restaurants, bars and go-go's are here and will stay. If you dont like to gamble, dont go to Los Vegas, go to the grand canyon. everybody would be happy then.

:D Bangla Rd has sh*te load of beer bars - certainly smaller in number, but heaps of them none the less.

Why this constant effort to turn Pattaya into a grannie resort? Grannies have already got Sarasota, Florida. Besides, there's Hua Hin. So buzz off, families and grannies! (In previous discussions, members with families have said they can survive well enough in Pattaya.)

And who cares about Pattaya's "image?" Let it be what it's always been!

Well said JSixpack!!!

The OP doesnt realise that some of us here rely on the bars/guesthouses

for our lively hood.

Hows that quote go?? "If you dont like it F#$k off !!"

Vegas is an interesting case.

It has got

GAMBLING

WORLD CLASS ENTERTAINMENT

WORLD CLASS DINING

MASSIVE PROSTITUTION

SHOPPING

and all that ... with no beach.

What does Pattaya with its below average beach got? Not enough yet to really compete in the long term.

We all know that beer is considered a bit low class so in keeping with the Pattaya's new attempt at cleaning up the cities image, perhaps they should close all the beer bars and replace them with wine tasting rooms. It would be OK to keep the girls but perhaps have them dress in a way more reminiscent of wine country atmosphere. :o

Hmmm...as the best Bordeaux's come from France, there is a real chance for more French kisses in the future. Not a bad idea at all! :D

maybe some french restaraunts is the answer and some italian, lets face it you cant buy a decent pizza in LOS

It would be interesting to know how many first time family types actually come back to Patters for the second trip or a third because they had such a great time here and would not choose anywhere else.

As opposed to the first time single, divorced male, female, gay, lesbian farang visitor looking for a great holiday.

I bet the families choose another "resort" town but the farangs looking for hoilday enjoyment whatever that may be keep coming back year after year.

There's nothing in Patters that would compel a family to return year after year,,,,,,,,,for what a new mall opening?

But the farang holiday merry maker? They keep coming and coming and coming!! I wonder why?

At last, a post concerning something I'm passionate about.

"If you dont like it F#$k off !!" Well said Scabo.

Why is there always someone trying to "improve" Pattaya? get this, IT'S FINE JUST AS IT IS! IT DOES NOT NEED IMPROVING.

Anyone who wants to experience overpriced "family resorts" can bog off to all the places that have already been sacrificed to the great money god, like Samui, Hua Hin etc etc.

There's only two places that your average low income lad can have a good time, Pattaya and Patong, so leave them alone, you capitalist b*******. Aren't there enough other places to ruin with your ghastly rip off concrete monstrosities.

Apart from greed, I've never been able to work out why anyone would want to change Pattaya anyway. The beach is rubbish, the roads are far too narrow to improve traffic ( unless half the town was pulled down ), and it's been getting on fine so far anyway.

Surely Jomtien is the place to go upmarket. It's got a much better beach, and the roads are wider.

Anyway, with the worldwide economic bust, I'm hopeful that all the so called "up market" tourists will stay away from Pattaya, and all the greedy tossers who have built/ are building all the new huge monstrosities go bankrupt. Serve them right. Then Pattaya can go back to being "Fun City", instead of an investment opportunity for the wreckers.

And guess what, the true Pattaya guys will still be coming when the last family resort has closed for lack of customers!

Booze, girls, boys, girls, ladyboys, girls. Long live Fun City.

So the foreigners who buy these expensive condos, like Northpoint, are not families. They are raunchy old men who love the bars and sex scene. Maybe they buy a 30 mill. baht condo to impress the bar girls on beach road.

Why do you care about what Thai and foreign families think about it anyway. There's thousands of resorts and beach towns all over Thailand for them to go to. Why do they have to come to Pattaya? What's in it for you?

When you moved there ( unless you've been living in Pattaya since the 60's ) it was already what it is. If you don't like it as is, why move there. Wouldn't Jomptien have been a better option?

Incidentally, North Pattaya pretty much sucks as far as having a good time goes; it's become an enjoyment desert. Used to be fun back before all the big resorts ruined it.

You sound like the sort of person who thinks a "nice" place is one where families go shopping in huge ghastly malls and eat in overpriced chain restaurants, then return to their rip off expensive resort to watch tv before going to bed nice and early. Hua Hin is like that, and it is a c*** dump.

And if they are, so what? What's your point? Seems to me you are putting them down. If someone wants to enjoy Pattaya, and has the money to buy a nice place to live, is that a problem?

Are raunchy old men only allowed to live in cheap dumps?

Even though there is more competion now compared to a few years ago. Pattaya is still a place where small business owners

Everybody seems to run Pattay down they call it a sewer with used condoms on the beach, but I actually think everyone likes living in this sewer. Nobody wants to change it, if they are happy to have drunken people fornicating on the beach at night and girls trying to accost you, great.

I'd be more up for some avant garde foam bubble art by renowned artist A. Vandernet, eg.

http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~foams/GALERY/Art2DFoam_Antje.JPG at the new Pattaya Museum of Modern Art, followed by an evening of a soapie massage at... well, you get the idea. :D

North pattaya is full of beer bars.I would agree that shutting many bars would result in the other bars being more profitable but maybe prices will go up.The good part of too many bars is competition.I dont accept that having too many bars results in less tourism for families. The beach road katoys and gangsters stop tourism, the corrupt police stop tourisam, the necklace theives stop tourism, shall i continue.

TOO many beerbars means TOO many competition and that's never good: Too many beerbars, too few customers with fixed costs. The few customers have to pay for these fixed costs, so high prices.

A few too many beerbars, a few too many competition is better: Competition is always good, and the nuber of customers mut be divided over the few too many beerbars; fixed costs are same same, so the prices are normal, because there enough customers to pass the break even point in a healthy way.

Just a few beerbars: not good at all: the TOO many customers have only a few beerabrs to visit. Since there are always customers, the prices will go skyhigh.

So basically, shut down half of the beerbars would be a good idea.
