Hollywood Steals Asia

Featured Replies

How do you guys compare these Hollywood rip offs of Asian movies. I remember the Thai movie First Flight and then came Flyboys. The there was Infernal Affairs and then Martin's rip, now there is Bangkok Dangerous, a white dude in deep with Thai organized crime..............Hollywood has run out of juice.

HOllywood ran out of juice (bar the exceptional standout) a couple of decades ago.

I see that they couldn't taint one of their money-earners by sticking to the original story.

Hollywood's been remaking Asian movies since "The Magnificent Seven" was taken from Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.

That is a good point. Perhaps I should ask why the current rash of Hollywood make overs?

Hollywood makes a lot of good, great and crap movies just as it always has, but nobody else even comes close to giving them any real competition. :o

Slight veer, but have you guys heard that the Thai movie "The Coffin" was made in English, but they have dubbed it in Thai with subtitles... ? (Should be going to see it tonight, so will find out for sure)

Sounds grim. What is it about?

Many Thai people believe that lying down in a coffin is a part of the death-before-dying ritual to prolong one’s life by playing dead. Chris (Ananda Everingham), an architect who is extremely claustrophobic but with hope to lengthen his girlfriend’s (Aki Shibuya)life, Chris decides to overcome his fear by being in the coffin. Zoe (Karen Mok), a nutritionist, takes care of her health religiously. However, only 2 weeks before marrying her fiancé (Andrew Lin), Zoe finds out that she’s in the final stage of lung cancer. Zoe then runs away to Thailand and discovers the coffin ceremony and decides to participate in order to save her own life. Chris and Zoe are confronted by a series of paranormal and terrifying incidents. Both might have to sacrifice their lives to unfold the truth.

Sounds interesting.

Didnt get to see it last night, but hopefully will tonight. It seems it has indeed been dubbed in Thai with English subs, in Thailand. Will be going to see it with the English subtitles, but hope to get a copy of the original English soundtrack later. Seems to be doing good box-office wise: http://thaifilmjournal.blogspot.com/2008/0...-with-cash.html Look forward to seeing it.

Also another veer... who agree's that the US version of Shutter was really quite bad, and the Thai version was cool. The scene with the Ladyboy nearly had me wetting my pants! :o

There was also a cool movie that i forget the title of, was a compilation of 4 (i think) short movies (Thai). Anyone know what it was called?. (*Spoiler coming up*) First one was about a girl who was being sent text msgs on her mobile from a Ghost, second was about a group of school kids who become cursed by the kid they pick on, third (the one i loved best) was about a group of guys on a camping trip, who become scared of meeting a ghost, but turns out they are actually ghosts themselves. Forget what the fourth one was.

Only as far as special effects are concerned, but certainly not in story-theme or content.

I LOVED "No Country for Old Men" last year which was pretty much a mainstream Hollywood film and won the Oscar with almost no special effects.

They truth is that Hollywood makes good movies all the time, but they also make lousy ones. It is the way of the world. :o

NCFOM was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. A few complained about the unconventional ending but to me it was very realistic.
