I want to stay in Thailand for 5 months. I came in on a 30 day visa which I plan to extend twice with visa runs, then go to Penang for a 2 month visa. Can I still do this and is it the best plan.

You entered on a 30 day visa exempt stamp. Not a visa.

Yes you can do this two more times.

Yes you can then get a Tourist Visa from Penang. 60 days and be extended for a further 30 days at Immigration.

Or you can get a double entry tourist visa from Vientiene Laos. This would give almost 6 months with extensions.
