I've had GERD/heartburn for some time now, three years, and after seeing some articles and Googling decided to go for an upper endoscopy exam.

Down to Vibhavadi Hospital last week to an appointment, and to stop my daily aspirin, down again this morning early to do the deed. Dr Mongkon.

In at 0830 hrs and out by 1000 hrs, total time. Don't remember a thing, and zero after affects, no sore throat at all. Tab? baht 10,156, about $290 at current exchange rate, rather less expensive than in the U.S. I'd bet.

In any case, no significant problem indicated, so will just continue to take my Xanidine pill about daily at bedtime.

Thanks for sharing that, Mac. I too need one and have been putting it off for years so this is encouraging to hear!

Go for it, not a problem.

I wasn't much looking forward to the procedure as I'd heard and seen info about the "gagging reflux" when swallowing or helping to swallow the endoscope, but NOTHING as it turns out. The IV anesthetic used is super quick acting and the wake-up 30-60 minutes later is without a hangover.

There is a spray anesthetic use on the mouth and throat that's not great tasting, indeed, the nurse asked in Thai how I liked it, I replied, "bo sep," not tasty in Lao, which got a good chuckle from the small crowd.

Only Q I forgot to ask the doc is I did wonder if the endoscope used is the same instrument used for the colonoscope. If so, reckon I'd do the two procedures in reverse order!!

Perhaps THAT accounted for the bad taste!!

Just joking; no, the scopes are different pieces of equipment.

I had an Endoscopy at the Bangkok hospital for the same reason and was charged 10,000 baht. I didn't bother with anaesthetic as I wanted to watch the moniter. Not too uncomfortable but I needn't have bothered as they gave me a DVD of the process anyway. All I have to do now is add subtitles and credits.

Also had the colonoscopy and got the DVD of that as well. So now I have a two box collection of both ends of my innards. Anybody wanting a copy of this riveting classic just send me 200 baht. Free carton of popcorn with every box set from now until Christmas. Hurry while stocks last ! The perfect Christmas gift for him and her !! :o

imo you paid too much. But that is just my opinion. it just sounds a little bit on the pricy side.

Well, two posts here with pretty close to the same cost, baht 10,00+-, at two different hospitals.

What do you reckon a better price would be?

FYI, I'll end up paying about 10% as my co-payment charge with my health insurance plan.

Actually, after the event, I shopped around a bit and found that you can get it done cheaper in a more er..... proletarian hospital. The Mayo hospital on Pahonyothin is o.k and charges about 6000 - 7000 baht last time I asked. No DVD though and no marble floor :o
