I will soon be purchasing a used Honda Phantom. All the papers are in order and legal. Can anyone give me a quick explanation of how to legally license and register the bike here in Chiang Mai? I know this has probably been covered before on this forum but I can't seem to find what I need to know.

Hi willbartholomew

Do you just mean change an existing plate to a local one, or register an 'unregistered' bike? If you purchased the bike from a shop, let them run around and do the work for you. It should be a common service offered by any half decent bike shop, so even if it's a private purchase, take it to a dealer.

I don't know about Honda Phantoms, but unregistered imported bikes (especially the bigger ones), can cost 60,000 THB or more to register. But as i say, with the Honda Phantoms which seem to be everywhere, it's probably less painful and more doable. Maybe the Phantoms are even assembled in Thailand, i don't know!

Cheers

Assuming you are buying a used bike, not a new one from a dealer. Take the bike and the seller to the registration office and have them transfer the ownership into your name. Pay for the bike only after that is done. To be sure you have your end together, you should go there a few days before and check with them about what papers you need to get it registered in your name, probably a residence certificate and passport.

Assuming you are not a Thai national, you will need a Statutory Declaration from your consulate/embassy stating your address if you are in Chiang Mai,If you reside in another partof Thailand you will have difficulty getting a bike registered here,as other offices require a Certificate of Residency

from Immigration.

There is no standard procedure from what I have experienced, just depends on the mood of the officer you encounter on the day.

Bill97 has the right Idea, let them do it and dont pay until you have the green book verified by someone to ensure it is actually in your name and insurance has been paid.

Good Luck....

you will need to go to licence dept I would go with the owner of the bike I did this about 2 months ago.

You will need a letter from the embassy that says you have an address .This was a farang to farang sale.

We both needed copies of our passports they inspected the bike vin #;s the new owner paid for the next years insurance about 400 baht there was a transfer fee he had to come back the next day they kept the green book and it was finalized the next day all this was done at the same location.

Sorry I do not remember the exact location but on the same road tht goes to lampang inside the superhighway about 3 kilos north Hope that makes sence.

Take the owner with the green book and a copy of your passport letter from the embassy and the bike

Then pay for the bike
