Bot Limiting Atm Withdrawls On Foreign Cards!

:o:D Anyone notice they are limiting ATM withdrawls on foreign bank cards? What's with the Bank of Thailand restricting foreign ATM cards to only 5,000Baht a transaction? This is typical TIT! I thought they were trying to market to upscale tourists? How many "upscale" tourist spend more than that in a day? First the capital controls now this! I guess they want those tourist to go to the ATM everyday on their holiday and rack-up FX transaction fees. Shooting themselves in the foot again!

Are they really?

What evidence do you have of this?

If you are wrong, will you change your signature to 97baht (in the dollar :D )

Unnecessary rant !

Sure your own credit is OK :D

I've been using my UK visa card to withdraw 20K at a time, for quite a while now, including yesterday, because I'm hoping that the Baht will drop in value before I make a large transfer.

I've not had any problems.

Two possibilities:

Some card issuers are nervous about Thailand, and block any ATM transactions until you contact them to lift the block. Maybe this 5K limit has been imposed by your card issuer to restrict any fraudulent activity.

Sometimes the ATMs run out of 1,000 Baht notes and they restrict the amount you take withdraw as it is limited to a certain number of notes per transaction - usually 20 but it may vary for different banks.

Other than that, it doesn't seem likely that the BOT has imposed a limit.

Whilst there is a limit that the BOT impose on banks to prevent both liquidity and FX risks, that amount is far too high for a consumer related ATM trx!. It is the bank itself that limits the withdrawal amount.

Assuming this is a debit card not credit card trx, this can be either the card issuing bank limiting the trx amount, and/or the bank that the ATM belongs to that you have used who is limiting the trx amount. Banks in Thailand will not impose a 5k ATM limit for both their own and other banks customers, that is too low. Most Banks will have a max limit of 20k per trx, including the bank that I work for here.

In your case your issuing bank is overseas, so it might either be your bank that has imposed a limit, perhaps due to a policy it has on overseas FX withdrawals, or the Bank here whose ATM you are using that might limit the trx amount, again due to a policy regarding overseas trxs.

Easiest way is to ask you issuing bank if there are any policies it has regarding the above, if not then you know it's the Bank here that is doing this.

Or it could be simply that the ATM you used only had 5k.

Merry Xmas...lets hope the ATMs are stashed with enough cash for the festive period...we try to predict peak usage patterns, but a sudden run can clean a machine out in minutes!

You should have checked with your bank before posting false information. The BOT does not limit atm withdrawls.

I took 10k today. No problem at all.

edit ---->

I just re read Mobi's post and remember not so long ago that the ATM had run out of 1,000 Baht notes and limited the transaction to the number of 500 Baht notes I could withdraw.

Maybe the problem?

Agreed...There are no restrictions on using foreign cards at ATM's - just drawn THB 50,000 out 30 minutes ago with a foreign card...suspect any restrictions if any are coming from your own home bank...

The Brit banks seem to be cautious on overseas withdrawals at the moment.

I’ve been talking to 2 long-term expat friends.

Nationwide put a stop on one guy’s card after he withdrew money in Cairo last weekend.

The other had the same problem in Saudi with his Lloyds account despite a history of regular withdrawals at the same bank attached ATM during the past few years.

Calls to their respective bank’s security departments unfroze the accounts.

Blocked cards do happen...but the issue here was the OP was suggesting that the BOT was limiting the amount of money that could be withdrawn from a Thai ATM on a foreign card...which is not the case..

however the persons own foreign bank could be restricting the amount drawn...

Went to TMB atm at royal garden in Pattaya yesterday, they had a sign on the ATM stating the BOT had limited foreign cards to 5,000baht withdrawal.

Also a friend from Australia who was here a week could only get 5,000b a time out from TMB atm on 2nd rd.

Southpeel I acknowledged that in my earlier post when I suggested the OP contact his bank.

There have been no problems withdrawing money from my foreign card over the past week including this morning. Only 1 ATM in the past week restricted withdrawal to 3,200 and that was due to it only holding 100 Baht notes, tried another ATM and withdrew 20,000 Baht.

I can only think the OP’s bank has put a restriction on his daily withdrawal amount or the day he tried he had a standing order transfer or payment go out of his account which then left 5,000 available on his daily withdrawal limit.

Occams razor....with all things being equal generally the simplest explanation is generally the correct one.

Seems to me the OP is playing conspriacy theorist..

Put my card into a SCB ATM and the max was 5k, last week in a shopping Mall, canceled and took 1 step right and put my card into Bangkok Banks ATM and withdrew 40k

So maybe it is the local bank or as posted before the machine is low on cash. this is only the 3rd time it has happened in 5 years

Based on all the experiences reported (except yours and the OPs), plus my own experience, it would seem clear this is not a BoT issue, but rather the local bank, or the overseas bank.

Nope!

I went to the hole in the wall last night and drew 20,000 at k-bank.

Charges were only $17.00 :o

I have had the same experience at several banks (TMB, K-Bank, BKK) in Pattaya with my USA ATM card. Couldn't get more than 10,000 out of any of them and I have a 30,000 baht per day limit. Finally went to my Siam Bank on 2nd Pattaya Road and had the inside teller get me 20,000 baht. I see on my latest bank statement that the Bank of America only charged me $17.20 USD for the pleasure! <deleted> bottom feeders! :D

I have 3 ATM cards and have been only able withdraw up to 5k too.

Oh wait, that's because I only recognized the following figures of 250, 500, 1000, 3000, 5000. Everything else seems to be a blur. :o:D
