Yes they are available when you cross the friendship bridge at Nong Khai. Used to be about $30 US. But they increased the prices. Not sure on the border how much they will be now.

I went into Laos via Mukdahan/Savannakhet recently and it cost me 1500 baht at the immigation desk in the ferry terminal at Savannnakhet. Procedure was very easy. About 10 mins wait in queue and then straight through.

i went to loas in october over bridge from nong khai

cost me and my thai girlfriend both 2000 bhat. plus bus over bridge (twice becuase my girlfriend wasnt given the white immigration slip.)

vientene is 20 mins away from the border.

thai people can travel without passport but i believe they need to get a certain document from somewhere in nong khai which takes time.

to save time she went like me on her passport.

well worth the trip i found vientiene both beautiful and relaxing and a welcome change to some of thailands ugly noisy concrete jungles.

Where did you stay there?can u recommend the guest house and how much did it cost?
