Recommendations For An Installer For Wifi And Acess Points In My House

Recommended Posts

I have a 3com router and 3com access points and I would like to get this installed in my house.  Can anyone recommend someone competent to do this?  The last two people that tried failed, with one guy saying something didn't work but he didn't know what, while the 2nd guy said there was a hardware problem, although when I took the hardware back to the shop it worked just fine. The guy that sold me the equipment quoted me an outrageous figure that costs more than it would in the western world to install, so I originally passed on him and his bad attitude.

What was the "something" that didn't work? It's quite easy to configure wireless access points etc normally. In a pinch the guy in the shop could configure everything there and then you just bring it home and plug it in where you want it?

Yeah it should be easy in theory, but setting the MAC address, local address etc and there just is no communcation.  ozymandious, I am using my old adsl modem, but I'd like the access points so I could roam around and not be chained to my desk.  If you want to work for beer, I'll be more than happy to drink some with you before during and after install :o

Setting MAC addresses is not normally necessary. Even if you want to limit access to particular machines WPA2 and a good password is enough. Just remember that you can't usually configure access points wirelessly, you need to plug them in to a computer (the first time at least, although allowing wireless configuration isn't really a good idea imho).

Anyway, looks like ozymandious has it covered.

Hi I can highly recommend Khun Koby owner of

http://www.m2kwireless.com/ 087 000 0613

They do many hotels and I used him to set up wireless at 3 houses.. he organized the line and everything as there was no phone line.

What I mean by everything is all that technical stuff that is beyond me.

Also his English is very fluent and he worked in Japan before for American Express I believe.

u do realise that u plug that on and put your modem on it and BAM it works after uve put your username/password for the dsl?

or you can buy a dlink and use it as a modem aswell. u plug it on, you clikc configure and ALL it asks is your username/pass for DSL.

a monkey with down syndrome would do it in half a minute

If it was only that easy.  I've had an English guy who was a hardware "expert" try to do it, then a thai guy who lived in the US for a bunch of years that has a computer shop here in phuket and he couldn't get it done either.

If you, canadianmonkey, think you can do it, feel free as I'll buy you plenty of beers to make it go BAM and have it working.

Can we clarify what exactly is needed here?

As I understand it from the OP you have a 'net connection and a modem and you want to connect said modem to a wifi router/access point.

After that there are more access points that need to be configured because they will work as repeaters to extend the wifi across a larger area? Is this correct?

What exactly did the seller do to show that all the equipment was working properly when you returned to the shop?

Something is fishy here imh(umble) o. If it works in the shop then there is no reason why it wouldn't work on site (unless you live in Area 51 or underneath a power station or something).

If the previous offers don't pan out I'd be happy to have a shot at it just out of curiosity. I have offices in town and Cherng Talay and I am also in Naiharn quite often so feel free to PM if I can help.

Give us a try P & P IT HOUSE in chalong, steelpulse

I would like to know what was the problem. Why is not work?

www.ppithouse.com

Something must be wrong with my computer. When I go to the P&P IT HOUSE website, the map on the Home page does not show the location of the shop. I know it must be there; I suspect that my laptop is at fault. Furthermore, my computer seems to have incorrectly labeled Chaofa West Rd. as "Chaofa East Rd." on the map and vice versa. I guess Kan-eng 2 restaurant moved its location to Chaofa West Rd.

Can P&P fix my computer to correct these apparent errors? Thanks.

I do wish to give a testimonial for P&P IT HOUSE. Last year I bought a new TP-Link Wireless router and I was unable to install it correctly myself. I went to P&P because they are close to where I live in Chalong. The boss sent a technician to my home and for a very reasonable price installed the router correctly and effectively. In the one year I have been using this connection, I have had no problems whatsoever. I would not hesitate to use their services again should the need arise.

Good luck to you, Khun Blackkope, in your business.

ok wel since nobody is up to task ill tell you, goto the configuration of your access point and set the vpi to 1 and vci to 32 if you're with TOT

if with TT&T call them, i forgot the numbers

And what exactly would ADSL modem connection details have to do with wifi access points and clients ??

access point doenst need any real configuration, if nothing works theres no other explaination.. If someone somewhat competant looked at it and said it didnt work, it leaves only that as a problem since most people have not heard about the VPI and VCI

Sure most people have not heard of VPI / VCI unless they are setting up an ADSL modem.. But again, what does ADSL settings have to do with wifi access points..

(bolded my me)

So far nobody is talking about modem settings except you.

Wireless access points definitely DO need configuration unless you want everybody in range to be able to use your network. At the minimum they need to have the default password and username changed and some sort of access controls implemented unless you are OK with a local pedophile using your account to download nasties.
