What Would You Grab On The Way Out Of The Door?

From the ashes: 'What I saved'

mercedes.jpg

Mercedes Davies

Age: 2

Lived: Maroondah Highway, Buxton

SAVED: HER BEST FRIEND, MARY THE DOLL

MOTHER Amanda Silcock said: "When Mercedes' nanna first bought Mary for her, it was love at first sight. Since that day, everywhere Mercedes goes, Mary is sure to follow.

"When the family fled on Saturday, it was the first thing I instinctively thought of. Her beloved doll is like a security blanket.

"Mary's always around, either in Mercedes' hand or in the car … I can't imagine what the last few days would have been like had she not come with us.

"As you can see, Mary is well worn. She's presently a bit dirty but she's had lots and lots of showers before, so another is not going to hurt her down the track.

"I think it's safe to say that Mary will be alongside Mercedes for quite a few years to come. They're very happy companions, as you can see."

You guys have obviously been divorced several times as well, and realise material possessions count for nothing.

My wife and my bible.

On a serious note, I asked my wife who is sitting beside me as I type my reply and she said, 'Excluding people it would be my bible' (given to her 25 years ago by her grandparents). Then she started weeping profusely.

What to grab ? Assume you mean the house is about to be destroyed. Unless I'd thought about it already I think I'd just leave and not take anything. Those of us who've been divorced a few times are used to starting again with next to nothing.

What's the first thing I would grab?

My trousers.

For one, it could get embarrassing otherwise, and second, almost everything I need or cherish is in my trousers at most times.

You just don't want the neighbours to start gossiping. :o

Deep pockets??? :o

If there was a fire on the way I wouldn't grab anything - I'd just run as quickly as possible.

The car keys

Judging by the stories coming out of Oz it had better be a Ferrari and it had better start first time.

Truth is that until it happens, God forbid, none of us know how we would react. Some would stand transfixed like a rabbit caught in the headlights and some would maintain a cool head and marshal others to safety and grab the real essentials. Somewhere between those two extremes lie the rest of us, hopefully tending towards the latter end of the spectrum.

Jessica Alba................Maybe the first/last/only, chance I'd get to grab her without serious criminal consequences.
