Tsunami 'victim' safe in prison

A man feared dead in the Asian tsunami disaster has been discovered safe and well in a British prison.

Friends and family of Mark Steven Doogue, 47, thought he was in Phuket in Thailand on a three-month holiday.

His sons Michael, 24, and Matthew, 19, from Salford, Greater Manchester, feared for his safety when he failed to get in touch following the disaster.

But police said he is in jail after telling colleagues he was going to Thailand for three months.

Holiday claim

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "He told his boss he was going to Thailand but he is actually in prison."

Police, who issued a photograph of Mr Doogue for his sons when they thought he was missing, said on Monday that Mr Doogue was "safe and well".

A spokesman said: "Mark Doogue was believed to be on holiday in Thailand when the tsunami occurred and his family were concerned for his wellbeing.

"Mark was not in Thailand at the time of the tsunami as was originally thought, and was therefore not affected by it.

"Mark is originally from Salford but had not lived in the area for several years. However, his two sons still live in the area."

Further details of his detention were not available.

Tsunami Fears Man Was in Jail for Child Porn

A pervert lied to his family about going to Thailand to cover up the fact he was convicted of child pornography offences, it emerged today.

Mark Doogue, 47, told friends and colleagues he was going to work as a chef in Phuket for three months when he was in fact going to prison.

His family only found out about the convictions when they feared he had died in the Asian tsunami disaster and issued an appeal for information.

But according to police and prison service sources, Doogue was in jail awaiting sentencing and had never been in Thailand.

Doogue, from Wilmott Street, Manchester, was convicted at Bury Magistrates Court on December 1, 2004, of distributing an indecent photograph of a child and possessing indecent photographs of children.

He was also convicted of failing to surrender to bail.

Doogue is due to be sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on January 28.

Before he was arrested, Doogue told his boss he was going to Thailand for three months.

When the island of Phuket was swamped by giant waves on Boxing Day, his sons Michael 24, and Matthew, 19, from Salford, Greater Manchester, feared he was dead.

They issued an appeal for information through the Red Cross’s special emergency website and Greater Manchester Police.

They said they were “gutted to think what could have happened” to him in the disaster.

But last night it emerged that Doogue had been lying and had not left the UK.

Michael said: “I haven’t really got any interest in talking to my dad now.

“I did want to know whether he was safe or not but now I know that he is alive I don’t want to talk to him.”

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said Doogue was “safe and well”.

He said: “Mark Doogue was believed to be on holiday in Thailand when the tsunami occurred and his family were concerned for his well-being.

“Mark was not in Thailand at the time of the tsunami as was originally thought, and was therefore not affected by it.”

I know a guy that sends his family pictures from all over the world.....his passport is full of Thai stamps..... :o  :D

Not to take anything away from that fact that this bloke is a jerk, I also know a gentleman that travels for 3-4 months ayear around Asia on business. Most of his time is ment to be spent in China and HKG. He manages to spend at least 6-8 weeks "working" in Thailand, without his wife knowing. He has set up 2 phone accounts in both places that divert automatically to his mobile phone... :D

Family disown 'tsunami' liar

'DISGUSTING'

A DAD who let relatives fear he was dead in the Indian Ocean tsunami when he was actually in a Salford jail for child pornography has been disowned by his family.

Mark Doogue, 47, told his family he was going to work as a chef in the Thai resort of Phuket and failed to tell them he had been arrested and put in Forest Bank jail last month.

Even after the coastal resort was wiped out in the Boxing Day disaster, father-of-two Doogue did not bother to send word from his prison cell that he was all right.

His sister Yvonne O'Brien and two sons Matthew, 19, and Michael, 24, both from Worsley posted desperate pleas for information on the International Red Cross website.

The truth only emerged when a police liaison officer called late last week with the news that Doogue was alive and well.

Yvonne, 44, last night branded her brother as "disgusting". She said: "We were all worried that he was dead, personally I believed that he was dead, but the boys still held out some hope. We did care when we thought he might have been lost, he is the boys' dad and my brother, but now it's finished."

Upsetting

She added: "A policewoman called me before the weekend to say that Mark is alive, but she would not say where or how she knew, which was upsetting.

"The last couple of weeks has put the family in a bad position and it has come at just the wrong time as Michael has just become a father himself.

"We have no reason to renew contact. He deserves everything he gets, like everyone else we are disgusted at what he was arrested for," she said. The family have had very little contact with Doogue since he was convicted of making indecent images of children .

He was convicted at Bury Magistrates' Court on December 1 last year and was due to be sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on January 28, but went on the run from police.

"We had to read in the local press what he had been convicted of and since then we have not spoken to him, and we don't want to," said Yvonne.

Before charges were brought against Doogue, Yvonne said she would see him regularly. "He was a normal guy, we had no idea what he was doing," she said.

He lived in the family home in Mereclough Avenue with his sons and wife, Mary, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

Before that he had been a sailor in the Royal Navy.
